I need some cheap tires for general commuting and recreational riding... basically, some 23/25/28mm that wont blow out on me... so cheap is good
if theres no overwhelming winner here ill just flip a coin :D
i vote for the maxxis..
Maxxis are cheng shin tires marketed in the US. They are good training tires, and has good adhesion.
Not listed but Vittoria Rubino Pros (or rubinos) are
very good inexpensive tires.

The Vredesteins have served me well. I've done general commuting and some longer rides for six months without giving them significant wear or losing a tube. I generally pull 6 or 7 commuting miles on Athens streets every day, and sunny days 30+ recreational rides in the local farm country.

I have been riding the same set of Panaracer Elites for about 5000 miles. They wear good, don't flat, and just seam to be great overall low-cost training tires.
The Rubinos are also not too bad.

Agreed Marty. That's what I have on my commuter/back-up road bike. Never had a flat. Paid $23US.

I've had Performance GT2K tires on my commuter for ~$1300 miles... so far, only two flats and not too much wear. I think I paid $10/per. Nothing special in terms of performance, but they're getting the job done!

Tires are where i wont go cheap because 2 flats in 1300 is 2 many.No flats untill you replace your tires is much better, around the block or commuting.
I use the Excel blues. One set lasted 3000 kms with no flats, second set had a flat every 500 kms and was poorly constructed. Although I like the tire you have to actually pick your tires. Very inconsistent construction.

I upgraded to Panaracer elite on my Diamondback and have had no problems. Though I have realized that wrecking can cause even great tires to blow ;).

Vredestein were what I was using, Volantie? not sure if I spelled it right. Anyhow, they had #145 lb rated! not too shaby, and were "cheap", very good ride but rather heavy. I didnt use them long, I put them in the basement because I figure life is short; you should enjoy the cycling event to the max so why settle for less of a tire when lighter is more fun...... :) Now I'm on the Pro Race tires, oh yeah, much nicer ....... :D

Beware the Rubino Pros are $30 & up, & are folded bead. The plain rubinos are $20-$25, have a lower tpi, and are a wire bead. I find the pros are more typically priced at $40 or more.
I had some Maxxis Deux tires... I think they call them Detonators now with a slightly different tread pattern. They were pretty good, and noticably sticky on turns... I was amazed that the dual compound stuff actually seemed to make a difference. Then, of course, someone stole my front wheel, and I had to get tires asap, the Plain-old-Rubinos (wire bead) were what I could find. They do seem tough, but don't seem quite as sticky on the turns. They were cheaper than the detonators.

Your avatar is fitting for this post. Raising the dead. But at the very least it was a good thread to revive as I'm looking at tires myself right now.

Hopefully the original poster has gotten some new tires after posting this thread almost 2 years ago.
p.s. Please let threads die a respectful death. ;)
I went into my LBS looking for a set of Michelin Carbons and came out with Maxxis Refuse for my commuter/rain bike. I've been very satisfied although I have to admit they have a terrible feel for the first 100 miles or so. After they've broken in, a very good ride.

Nice...old threads ROCK!
BTW - the poll was like asking:
"Which do you prefer?
1. Poop
2. Poo
3. Poopoo
4. Stinky
5. Steaming pile of gut magic"
...FWIW....in a billion year old thread...

I bet this guy looking for cheap tires spent a fortune in the last 2 years buying new tires, tubes, patches, air cartridges and new biking shoes (that he wore out walking). LOL
I had hutchinson that came with my cannondale, I had 4000 miles on the front tire before I replaced it. No flats, still looked OK nobody could believe it. so that is my 2 cents:innocent:

I use the Maxxis Re-Fuse (horrible name) tires for training. Heavy and casing is stiff. The rubber is sticky enough to make up for a lot of it though. They're also very cut resistant.
Vittoria Rubino Pro Slicks are a darn good choice too. They can be had from probikekit.com for $20 or so. Wonderful tire for the price.
Vredestein Ricorso, ~$20 very tough and long lasting.

Make that over 4 years - original post was in 2004.
I hear the Zombie Resurrection is a solid all round performer
Specialized Armadillos or Michelin Krylion Carbon... Buy the cheap ones 2-3 times, or the good ones once. It'll come out in the wash.
