Got nostalgic today and fired up the web browser, looking for local news sites from my native city. It's bad... there were 8 murders from Friday night to Saturday morning. Not even a 24h period. When you are born and raised on a place like that, you get used to it. Like it is "normal" for people to behave violently. Then you move to a much quieter place, experience the difference for a few years, look back and think "wow".

I tried to find sites with crime stats from all US cities to compare them, no luck so far. I'm curious to know what other places have it just as bad... if any. To get an idea, I remember it was standard issue to have steel bars on all doors and windows, 8 foot fence in the backyard with barbed wire, 6 foot fence in the front yard (yes, fence in the front) with yet another gate for the driveway... crazy.

Sounds like my home town.

Sorta - they've graduated to fenced communities. Oh, and normally had a dog in the yard - german shepherd, rottweiler etc. I was surprised when I came to North America by the open yards.

I don't mind going back to the old town to visit, but you'll note that I don't live there any more. I became disenchanted with urban living about 20 years ago.
