Hello all, any advise on maintaining weight and energy on a liquid diet? My jaw was fractured and wired up last night, so it looks like a few weeks without solid food. I was supposed to see a dietician before leaving the hospital, but I sort of snuck out. The surgeon mentioned ensure, so i stocked up for a day or two. I'll probably go to costco tomorrow to see if they carry it. I can't live on ensure for weeks! Help! :twitchy:

Split pea soup. One of my favorites.
V-8, Carrot juice, jamocha shakes...

Ensure is NAUSEATING. I would suggest a lot of smoothies, and maybe some **** fast, and whatever else people here suggest, but good heavens, ensure is gross. Don't do it. Yicks.

my first thought was using a blender on real food. i gave some corn chowder a whirl and it wouldn't go through my teeth. we are talking liquid here. iv'e got a freaking strainer bolted to the front of my face. there is a gap back where my wisdom teeth used to be. i went to ace hardware and got some clear tubing, but even the small size won't fit. i'm screwed. i'll be looking around the internet for suggestions. thanks for the replies. except the guy who hated ensure. it's not bad. no, no, no. not bad at all....:twitchy:

Is it possible to sip some smoothie type stuff, then pucker up in just such a way that the drink will be forced through the wisdom teeth gap?
If that's not possible, I'd suggest investing about a hundred bucks in a Jack LaLain juicer.

great advise on the juicer. i just remembered i've got a nice big champion juicer. it goes through carrots like a chainsaw. one of those spinners like a lalane works great too. as i recall, the spinners are better for kale and 'leafy' stuff. but for carrots and tough stuff, you can't beat a champion. i'll get my vitamins, that's for sure.

Go talk to that dietitian you were supposed to see. Get advice from someone who knows something about the subject.

+1.
You can foo about here and get our take, or see a professional who can give you the real skinny.
If she recommends Ensure, come back and see us...

No. No. No. This is far more entertaining.

If I was forced onto a liquid diet I would be having a lot of home made bone broths (stock). I would make a soup with some fat, I would use beef fat, go for butter if you can handle dairy, the home made stock and some salt. Vegetable juicing is good. Plenty of celery and cucumber for the green foods. If you can handle dairy I would make an egg flip which is milk (go for full fat as you will NEED the calories), one raw egg whole or yolk only, a drop of vanilla essence and a little sugar to taste. A little fresh fruit juice through your own juicer wouldn't hurt either.
Anyway keep it fresh. There are plenty of better alternatives than Ensure (which I think of as fast/junk food for geriatrics(thats the field I'm in)).
Between fresh dairy, eggs, stock, fresh vegetable and fresh fruit juice that should be enough nutrients to keep you healthy for a couple of weeks. I would add some fish oils too and I think you would be good.

But wait, there's more. FIBER.
When your making some vegetable juice add some of the pulp back in. Its not tasty but the fiber will be good.

just a quick follow up. tried my first juicer drink today. it went down relatively easy through a straw through my front teeth. when the mixture got pulpy at the bottom, i poured it in my mouth and squeezed it alongside my teeth to the gaps where my wisdom teeth used to be and it flushed right down! woo hoo!! i can deal with some fiber !! it was messy, but it's worth it. now if i could only speak without sounding like a hissing slobbering alien.
