Bicycle Mechanics - dumb rohloff question

dumb question, but has anybody put a rohloff speedhub on a 700c wheel? i was looking at their online speedhub finder and they don't list it as an option. the literature lists some compatible 29in wheels and the spoke length, but no 700c rims.

Yes. This Waterford, for example.

Interesting dropout/track ends on that frame. Nice way of getting chain tension & ease of service on the Rohloff.

They might have it listed as a 28" wheel, which for some odd reason is the common European name for 700.

EDIT: It's listed as '28 Zoll' on the Rohloff site.

Isn't it ironic that the Europeans list a metric wheel size (700c) in English measurement terms?

700c is hardly a 'metric' size, nor is 28" the imperial size - they are 'names' for the size... the metric size is 622mm.

Jaa, I could never figure that one out. It's the only thing commonly measured in inches I've ever come across in Europe.

Sure- I saw a Rohloff on a 700C wheel last weekend (on a modified Bacchetta recumbent, in fact).

If you use Spocalc: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/rinard/spocalc.htm , it already has the dimensions of the Rohloff hub built in. All you need to do is select the hub, your chosen rim, and it calculates the correct spoke length for however you want to build the wheel.

Yes, it's a metric size. The original dimension referred to the outside diameter of the rim and tire combination being (about) 700 mm. In fact there were three "700" sizes, 700A, 700B and 700C, using various tire widths and rim diameters but all being about 700 mm outside diameter.

The mish-mash of names and sizes was finally rationalized by the European Tire and Rim Technical Organization (ETRTO) which defined wheel sizes by the rim's bead seat diameter so a "700c" rim is defined as 622 mm and a "27"" rim is defined as 630 mm.

The outside diameter of a current 700c rim with a 23 mm tire is about 668 mm but when the size was first named, tires weren't that small. However, a 39mm tire on a 700c rim would be about 700 mm in outside diameter.
