Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - Got the crabs

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
After living through five days of rain courtesy of tropical storm Fay the weekend cleared for a ride. Our group ride runs on A1A between the Indian River and the Atlantic Ocean. As their dwellings had been flooded out by the 12 inches or so of rain we had, the land crabs were out in full force. We spent quite a bit of effort trying to dodge the carcasses of the dead ones run over by cars and the suicidal attacks on our wheels by the living. Coming on to their mating season this situation isn't going to get any better I guess.

I'm guessing it will start stinking soon over there.

I'm sure you know the smell well. How well did you make out during the storm?
Aside from the crabs, today's ride (different route) got slowed down some by flooded areas along Old Dixie.

Saw a couple of them running, stalking on-coming cars on US1 after church. Didn't hang around to see how well the stalkers made out.
Poor little buggers. When I was a kid and I lived on a lake in cottage country, the highways were always covered with frogs after a rain. I'm glad I didn't ride my bike on the pavement back then. :(

CNN just ran a piece of a 6 bike-car accident by the pier in Miami (I could see a cruise ship in the background). Is that by you? Something about the bikes doing something and not seeing the taxi, and just at that time the taxi driver fell asleep at the wheel and took them all down. Someone went through the front window. :(
And yes, I anticipated this thread to about you biking to a local brothel. :thumb:
Yum. Nothing beats a Maryland crabcake.
Man I would freak out if I saw something like this.

Good grief. :twitchy: The sight of arthropods doesn't freak me out, even in large numbers, but hearing their little shells crack under tires would make me want to run out and scoop them all up.
That said, are they edible? :P I don't eat meat myself, but if someone went out and took a bunch for food it would at least be less wasteful than letting them all get flattened. Or is this breeding season so you don't want to be thinning the population at this time?

I am from Sanford, FL Originally (living in Nashville now) I had the misfortune of taking my vacation to visit my family during Fay. It rained the whole week practically. Lots of rain in my town... some streets flooded and my sisters work (a law office owned by a guy my parents went to church with) was flooded... All my family's property was ok though, thank god.

I don't think you'd like these crabby patties:)
We do have blue crabs here in Florida, the land crabs are quite different.

The locals don't eat them but, the Haitians seem to enjoy them. Technically they are a protected specie IIRC but that doesn't seem to stop the islanders. As I understand it, they need to be put in clean water and allowed to flush the mud (they live in mud burrows along the shoreline) from their system before you would want to eat them.

I would figure if 4,294,967,296 crabs start to cross, about 8 make it to the other side. If this is a common occurrence, then what would probably help is a crab crossing, could be implemented like a drain pipe, that goes from one side of the road to the other, in several places, to give the crabs somewhere to cross under the road, rather then over the road.

That's the limitation of unique addresses using IPv4.
I still want to see this land crab march in person.

Yeah, that's why it jumped out at me...
