Mountain Biking - Super Tough Derailleur

i was just wondering if someone knows of a really strong derailleur because im tried of doing this:

this happened after i jumped down 6 stairs. about 4 feet. i bent it back out because it was bent into the spokes, recking 8 spokes. i was going a good 20mph.

Fail less.



No derailleur will hold up if you crash on it.

1. make sure your limit screws are adjusted properly

2. make sure you're not running too much chain

3. make sure your mech hanger is straight

all that will do you more good than burlier parts (of which the most burly mechs are still hanging out there in a pretty fragile way) if you didn't hit anything to cause it to go into the spokes, it's most likely mechanical error more easily fixed by setting things up properly. otherwise you'll just end up having it happen again.

otherwise, since you're running shimano: deore, lx, slx, xt, xtr, saint. take your pick based on your budget.

i didnt fail. i landed perfectly. very perfectly.

as far as i know everything was in tip top shape. im guessing it just gave out. i jump it hard everyday and "most of the time" i land perfectly. this is the second one that has broken on me so maybe its just the type that im using.

Then get a Saint, and make sure all the limits and adjustments are set correctly, and the hanger is on right/tight.

ok. im thinking it failed because i normally check it before and after trails or jumps and i havent done that in about a week or so...

They don't bend into the spokes all on their lonesome. Something is out of whack. Get a new one; whatever fits your budget. Be sure everything is on properly. If the limit screws, cable tension, and hanger are all in order, the most likely culprit is too much chain.

You had something screwed up in the adjustment dept. You should go get an XTR and see if it that solves your problem.

the cheaper derailers are probably less fragile.. I know my XT looks wimpy when I look at the acera on my old bike.

You either don't land perfectly, don't know how to "wrench a bike" (as Cheeto says), or you don't know the difference between "tip top shape" and severely jacked and ready to spontaneously self destruct.;)

Maybe you should go SS or internally geared. Maybe you need the strongest most advanced drivetrain available.

Oh man I beat your busted derailuer today. Mine completely snapped off in my back spoke after hitting some downhill roots. I didnt drive to the trails so I had to walk the dang thing home. I didn;t do anything out of the ordinary either, let alone crash.

Shimano (as well as other companies) have come up with all sorts of stuff in the past that was supposed to be "bombproof and wasn't. Just because it's steel and ti doesn't mean it's immune to failure, smartass.

They may look stronger but they aren't. The cheep stuff is cheep stuff. Go spend money on a XT or up or Sram x.7 or up.

+1. A rusty chain tells you a lot about how much TLC a bike gets.

Looking at the pics, there is nothing on that bike that is in tip top shape.
