I built a set a few months ago and laced them 3-cross, and they look pretty normal. I don't think 4-cross would've worked too well, the angle leaving the hubs would've been insane.

Most common is 3x. And some hubs are lace-specific. Like the Macneil that is 3x only. Or the Simple that is 4x only.
