"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - hello. i am an idiot.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

You said Cat5, right? Did anyone even notice?
BTW how can you basically be about to win a race?

is there really a cat 5 state championship? would seem that it would encourage sandbagging. Any way I can downgrade to 4?

You do something dumb, invite smart-arse remarks and the get offended by it? :roflmao2:

Just like the cat 3 and 4 state championships encourage sandbagging.
To the OP - I hope you didn't get hurt too badly (or hurt anyone else). The good news is that your mistake is one that you won't make twice.

Noteworthy experience. Sorta like crashing in an individual TT.
Anyway, the speech I always give my kids when they mess up, is: "Nobody's perfect. We all make mistakes. What separates the idiots from the smarter folks is that smarter folks generally learn from their mistakes. Idiots keep making the same mistakes over and over."
What did YOU learn from your experience?

You crash too much.
Haven't you totaled like 3 bikes this year?
Edit: Hi Gary!
BTW how can you basically be about to win a race?
I thought Bob D had a genuine question. Not sure why the OP was offended.
Was the OP off solo by 10" w/ 200 meters to go and crashed, or was he in a field sprint, confident in his abilities after winning Thursday morning's city limit sign, over defending champion Fred Van Frederick.
Not for nothing, but cmon OP, just answer the questions truthfully and nobody gets hurt.

i was about to win a race once but about 20 other guys faster than me got in my way.

Yeah, um, I crashed in an ITT. Felt really stupid. I was a little dehydrated and had just hammered up a hill right before a turnaround. Took the turn too wide and smacked into the curb. I didn't even realize it was about to happen until I hit it, that's how out of it I was :p

Not too long ago I read the riot act to a newbie racer on a training ride for watching his wheel instead of the road during a sprint. He never would have seen the car coming.

It's ok. God all too often has a good laugh at my expense, too.
I was once leading a sailing race and you were supposed to pass the final buoy to starboard and I passed it to port. The victory horn didn't sound, so I realized my mistake and looped around to cross the right way and another boat beat me by a foot.
gsteinb
08-25-08, 06:24 PM
that story would make him feel better if when going around the buoy you crashed the other boat and sunk.

Hi Gary http://fairwheelbikes.com/forum/images/smiles/Smiley_wave.gif
Did you go up to the official and tell them you would have won if it weren't for the curb. I think they will still give it to you.

I thought it was for a BJ. Did I fill out the wrong GD form again?
If the title and the OP's first two Ps didn't make my night enough, I came across a couple of other gems from him that helps add context to his posts:
read everyones response and i like this approach the best. i have a tendency to let my emotions run wild
and...

So you hit the curb and crashed. Is that the end of the world? No.
So you crashed and posted it on BF. Is that the end of the discussion? No. Not by a long shot.

The real question is were you ...
... wearing white Sidi's?
... sporting white bar tape?
... white socks, below the ankle?
... shaved legs?
... strategically adjusting your package as you leaned into your white Selle saddle?

as a rider of very modest ability, I once instigated a breakaway on the first lap of a cat 3/4 criterium that would eventually lap the field. This course had 12 turns on a 1/3 mile course, and I correctly analyzed the fact that going around the corners by myself would be a lot faster than almost any pack. Two other guys went with me, and we were still comfortably riding away when I fell down in the middle of a corner about halfway through the race. I would say that lapping the pack is a dream that I have always had, and never will accomplish, but I was sooooo close that day. So I feel for the OP. Except he owes us some more explanation so we can insult/console properly.

You know you are dealing with a bike racer when, given a chance to have anything he wants, he chooses to increase his lactate threshold. :D

You are forgiven.
The following is a true story which I once read somewhere on the internet (the names have been changed to protect the innocent):
Botto dies and goes to heaven. Saint Peter meets him at the gate. Botto asks if there are racing bicycles in heaven. St. Peter says "Sure, let me show you," and leads Botto into the finest Velodrome you can imagine.
"This is great," Botto says.
"You will love it here" says St. Peter. "You will be fitted a custom track bike, the mechanics will glue on fresh silks each night, and your personal masseuse is always available."
As they speak a blur flies by them on the boards riding a gold plated Cinelli and Botto says "Wow he was fast, that must be YMCA!"
"No," says St. Peter, "that was God, he only thinks he's YMCA!".
:p

If its any consolation I did see a pretty good 2 do about the same thing once. Although it was at a training race.
On the plus side when you're sitting around "bench racing" with a few buddies 20 years from now this will be one story that will always come up. Fame isn't always fleeting.

My wife's lactate threshold was 6-months. After that it was all bottles for little psimet. Only a miracle would have changed that so ....I guess I see your point....
