Utility Cycling - Took the Xtracycle Plunge: Thoughts on 2 child carrying

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Well, I've been trying to figure out a way for some time to efficiently carry stuff and my 2 kids around by bike. We have a bike trailer, but my eldest is out growing it. I dreamed of a Bakfiets, but just can't afford one right now. So, I have a Trek 7200 (700c) hybrid that's not being ridden and went ahead an bought a Freedrider kit this weekend with Footie attachments. It should be arriving later this week. I plan to talk about my experience with it and do a review on my blog http://AustinBikeBlog.org in the coming weeks.
My question for the group is about making this bike useable for carrying 2 children, right now ages 2 & 4. I've seen some people put a stoker bar on the back, but I'm looking for something a little more secure as my kiddos have a tendency to doze off on rides of more than 10 minutes.
The best solution I've seen is something like this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/happyhoppyfamily/2239299645.
I'm interested to hear suggestions or examples of what has worked with other people.

If you'll scroll about halfway down, you'll see a picture of something that might be of interest.
Here's another picture from the same blog:

I can't find the pic but someone recently posted one on the rootsradicals yahoo group. It shows two of those beige kid seats screwed/bolted to the xtracycle snapdeck. The ~4yr old in front looks ecstatic to be hanging on to the stoker bars and her 2yr old brother doesn't seem to mind having his legs sandwiched against his sister's seat.

I just finished up a home made set of handle bars for my kids out of PCV piping. Here's a picture of one of our first rides out with the new setup. I still need to finish out wrapping the tops of the bars with bar tape. I'll be writing more details about how I built it next week on my blog. I'll let everyone know when that's up.

Excellent! I was just agonizing about this problem last night. Great idea! :thumb:

That is a great idea! Kudos to you sir. I almost forgive you on your dislikes of hybrids! LOL
I plan on stealing that idea for my Xtracycle build. Is the plans or directions on your blog site? I'm a pretty lazy thief.

Thanks. I'm going to write up an article about it this week with instructions. You'll just have to wait until then or get off 'ur duff!

Consider DOT conspicuity tape on the bars.
The PVC is pretty sweet for younger kids. I attached a big cruiser bar to my seat post for my 3 and 8 year old, and it works great. I never ride with just my little one though. Her older sister is always behind her and has her arms around her.
