I have disassembled the my speedplay zero. Instruction manual suggests heating the trox screw with a soldering iron
to loosen the locite. After cleaning/lubing, it spins pretty nicely (without this screw).

Now I'm ready to put them back together. However if I tighten the trox screw too much, it
binds and the pedal can't spin. If I don't tighten it, it has some play. So how should I approach this?
thanks.

A well greased pedal should not "spin". It's the dry ones that spin. The pedal should turn smoothly with no grinding noise.

I agree--- use white grease

When I said "spin", I meant I could rotate the pedals freely, not that it would spin like a free wheel.

I agree, use white grease on your freewheel.....

I suspect that white grease will work well, but my Speedplay grease gun came with green grease.

grease has temp max and min--- good to know--- do your bearings well
