Bicycle Mechanics - ocr 3 to commuter project. Are these parts compatible?

I have a giant OCR 3 frame that I want to turn into a commuter. I will probably use the sora derailleur set and no name brakes that came with it. I will probably use a 700 x 28 tire. I want to make it into a flatbar. What are my options for Shifters/brake? Would this type of shifter work with the sora derailleur and road brakes?

those shifter will work fine with your set up, as long as you have the correct number of index positions (I.e. 8 spd shifter for an 8 spd der). The trick for the brakes is a little hidden. If you squeeze the lever without any cable in the hanger you will see a red tab with the letters c and v on it, attached by a small phillips screw. Switch the tab so that the c (for caliper) is located next to the hanger. The v is for v-brakes and is the wrong actuation, resulting in sloppy performance. If you have the paper work for the shifters it has a good diagram on how to do it. Hope this helps. post some pics when your done.

Hey man thanks for the info. It will be a slow build. Right now I am just trying to figure out how much it will cost in components? Hoping to try and get it done for under 150 or so.

You probably just need to match the bb type. So basically, the hole in the crank must be the same across the board unless you change bottom brackets.

yeah any shimano triple will work. The trick to keeping it cheap is to buy the un-labeled shimano parts. for example shimano just came out with the 2200 line which is a square taper crank availible for road and mtn. applications and is designed to work well with 8spd rear ends (i.e. spacing for wider chain and such).
Remember that your front der. cable is going to be bottom pull so you are pretty much stuck with a road der. (they make shimano 2200 part for that too)

p.s. they do make a 10 spd dura-ace flat bar shifter. Its pretty sick all shiny and junk.

Well i did sort of just the opposite than the OP, i grabbed an Hybrid and turned it in a road/super hybrid bike. Campagnolo flat bar brifters, disc brakes, carbon handlebar, cane creek wheels and others :D

I'm still not finish, but im riding it every week end with my kid :)

That shifters is nice but too expensive.. again... wonder when SHIMANO will ocm with a flat bar BRIFTER in 10sp :)
