I am an avid cyclist, and I have taken time to learn about fixing and maintaining my bikes whenever possible. I took a basic overhaul class a couple of years ago, but now, for several reasons, I am looking for something more comprehensive. I have thoroughly read the websites of The United Bicycle Institute and Barnett Bicycle Institute, and it is difficult to tell what the differences are between the two. Does anyone have any insight into comparisons between the two schools? I'd really like to hear anything anyone has to say about either of the schools specifically, or about the value of these kinds of schools generally. Thanks.

either of those classes will teach you everything you need to know... except for experience. If you have the $2000+ and two weeks, go for it. I have not gone to either and a head mechanic for a shop and a pro team. I've learned everything I know from taking things apart, putting them back together and making mistakes.

Experience will also teach you that barnetts is an 'opinion'. Some of what they say is clearly and utterly ****ing wrong.

Both are pretty good and in very nice riding locations...Colorado Springs (B's) and Ashland OR (UBI). Barnetts has a good set of mechanic manuals with a CD as well. I have seen some errors but as general guidelines the manuals are pretty good. I am planning on taking the UBI frame building class in the next 2 years. Good Luck and have fun.
