Foo - Foxes update...

I found out talking to someone that the whole fox family, 2 adults - 4 kits, all live in the back garden of a nursing home about 3 blocks away, where many of the staff and residents have been throwing them food for several months.

The kits run together through the neighborhood a lot. The one still comes in the house.

Sunday morning these two cracked me up running and sliding around on the boat cover for about 15 minutes. It almost seemed like they were playing "King of the boat". One of them "won" when he got the other to jump off, then that one would run under the boat and try to jump up behind the other. :lol:

I live in a neighborhood that is on the edge of town. Everything to the north of us is old plantation land that is now in a conservation easement.

We have been in the house since 1991 and have observed the wildlife over the years becoming more and more at ease around people. Sunday afternoon we had two deer come into the yard and lie down. They stayed there most of the afternoon and didn't get alarmed when I came around the house to get the garbage can.

There is a flock of wild turkeys that has taken up residence in a wood lot close to the house. Fifteen years ago if you came upon a flock of turkeys they would scatter as quickly as possible. These guys just kind of move out of the way and keep on feeding.

Feeding wild animals is a recipe for trouble, especially canines. What they are being taught is to hunt in human-inhabited locations. They're cute til they're real, real hungry. Then someone's gonna get bit or worse, and some foxes are gonna get shot.

We're not talking wolves or coyotes. These are small dogs. I don't think they pose much of a threat other than to cats and small pets. We're infringing on their territory half the time and then complain when they don't move. There is the rabies concern though. I read somewhere here in Tx they put down bait that had some kind of rabies medicine in it to keep the disease down. Wonder if that'd be an option?
