Dillinger and the Wild Bunch are my favorite movies ever, even if not the best.
Then there are the others, in no particular order- Blackhawk Down, Caddy Shack, Animal House, Aliens, The Ghost and the Darkness (if for no other reason than being a well made movie that 100% stuck to the truth) 7 Samurai, The Good The Bad And The Ugly, The Death Wish and Dirty Harry movies (strictly because I find them hugely entertaining, not because they are well made) and finally, 1941. If I wasn't getting pretty tired I could probably think of some more.

My top 10 in no particular order:
Serenity
Dust to Glory
Saving Private Ryan
Secretary
Ray
Band of Brothers
Enemy at the Gates
Best in Show
Seabiscuit
Antwoine Fisher
ATAC49er
08-25-08, 09:43 PM
Godfather I & II
Swordfish
Goodfellas
Harlem Nights
Young Frankenstein
Blazing Saddles
there are more, but brain-lock is setting innnnnnnn.....................
Saving Private Ryan
Lost Battalion
Count of Monte Cristo
Master and Commander
Fargo
Edit: Maybe not the best movie ever, but certainly very, very, very good -- and one of my favourites.
The Princess Bride
And for some reason, The Hunt For Red October.
Fargo
I'm no movie critic or film studies major, so I won't touch on what the "best" movies are, but Fargo and Pulp Fiction are two of the movies that I can watch over and over and not tire of.
Throw in the Indiana Jones and Die Hard trilogies as well. :) (The Star Wars trilogy would be included, were it available on DVD...)
Serenity was a great movie, but it tends to make me sad, because it serves to underscore how good Firefly could have been if allowed to run its course.

That's my criteria for a great flick. Not really worried about what they'd say about it in film school....
I agree with the Clint Eastwood spaghetti westerns too; kinda cheesy in every way but vastly entertaining.
For me, the BEST flicks are the ones that combine a great plot, some food for thought, terrific acting and cinematography - with that little something extra. Most films are lucky to have one or two of these going fro them. To me, films like the first 2 godfathers and the Seven Samurai have them all, in spades.....
my list was short and off the dome...I already wanna add a few hitchock films (Notorious, North by Northwest) and I don't care how cliched it is - Casablanca may be the best freaking movie ever made....
which brings us to this (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?p=7343640#post7343640)
and this (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?p=7343665#post7343665)
I'll add The Last Picture Show to my desert Island list.

Sponge Dad, I would argue with you that Leaving Las Vegas is the Best (and most) depressing movie ever.
It was so depressing that me and my wife wanted to kill ourselves when it was over.
Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100519/)
good one - that should go in the underrated thread as well. Love the Pink Floyd too.

It was so depressing that me and my wife wanted to kill ourselves when it was over.
I saw it on video and had to turn it off several times....it was just too much for one sitting.
I have Schindler's List sitting by the VCR and mean to watch it (never seen it yet) but I am having trouble finding a day when I have three hours to spare and am in the suitable mood (not cheerful, of course, but not too down either, as I am thinking that flick would nudge me towards sticking my head in the oven)
The Bourne Identity
Not sure I'd say the best movie ever, but the Bourne movies are really good at what they do. I just think about the music and I want to watch them again. Bourne Ultimatum is my favourite of the three, though.

I did that with "American Psycho" (for the record, I love the movie). I figured the book couldn't be too violent/gruesome/whatever. Yikes.
Seven Samurai

Hardboiled
The Killer
Bullet in the Head

I see your point, still, I think I'll go with best, because who thinks of Elvis, African-American JFK (played by Ossie Davis, no less), & a ***** Tonk Mummy in one script. Name another film with an even remotely similar plot. Can't, can you? EXCELLENT!

Sophie's Choice. Great movie and I will never watch it again.
I have a very difficult time watching movies where children suffer or die (even off screen, unless its a giant explosion from space).
Started when I was watching The Cook the Thief His Wife & Her Lover (itself, an interesting movie), and by the time I had my two kids, it became an almost immutable emotional barrier.

I am a rather passive movie watcher; if it's not obvious, I often don't notice. I never realized what "the choice" was until the end. I was stunned.
Kinda like "The Crying Game":p
The Professional is a good flick, minus the creepy Lolita stuff.

but IIRC Leon wasn't comfortable with the Lolita-ish subtext - he wanted her to be, in his own way, a good little girl. Maybe the Director is a perve for having Portman dance around like Madonna, but the actor playing Leon nails portraying his nascent paternal feelings for her.
