quick question:

Will I be better off making my bike a fixed gear for the winter, or would I be okay to just set in an all-around gear and keep it in that gear?

Honestly shifting isn't that big of a problem in the winter.

I use a 38/16 all winter and it seems to work fine for me.

Are you confusing fixed gear with single speed, or do you really mean fixed? A fixed gear has no freewheel or freehub so that the pedals move whenever the bike is moving. Some people claim a fixed gear is good for winter because you can detect when the rear tire is about to loose traction. If you are just wondering about single speed, I agree with Podolak, shifting is usually not a problem in winter. If for some reason you want to stick with single speed, you might want to leave all the gears on it to start with, so that you can easily figure out which gear you want to ride in.
