Hi! I'm a regular over at the C&V sub forum and know my way around a wrench on most things vintage. I'm hoping knowledgeable Bike Mechanics can assist me or at least alleviate any unfounded concerns. :)

Here's the problem: I have a SRAM Dual Drive equipped Cannondale from 2002-03. I'm the original owner and I've kept up with regular maintenance, cleaning, etc. Last week while installing a new chain, cleaning the 9 speed cassette, and relubing the RD, I noticed there is a slight side to side wobble in the hub. Since this is a 3 speed internal hub with sealed bearings, creatures I'm not all that familiar with, I don't believe there are any cones and lock nuts to adjust (if it were a '60s-70s vintage Campagnolo Record HF hub, I'd say it would need about 1/8-1/4 turn on one cone).

So is it time to have the sealed bearings replaced? Or is this normal? The wobble is slight. Also, is there any other maintenance that can be done to this hub? Do the internals need to be oiled or greased on any kind of schedule? While I could do some research and tell you exactly how many miles are on the bike, my best guess off the top of my head is something on the order of 4000-5000 miles.

Thanks for your assistance and guidance!

Well, I discovered the problem. Funny how answers come to you at inopportune times.

I took the Cannondale for a ride on a Rail Trail, and at 10 miles in the chain came off. I then discovered the axle had broken into two pieces. Oh well!

Possibly a few pictures will help describe my challenge.

Well, there's nothing for it but a replacement axle, but I don't think you'll have much luck getting replacement parts for a Sram gearhub this side of the pond. I have communicated with Sram several times about this, but their line is always the same. They do not import gearhub parts to North America. If anyone has parts, they are sourcing them in Europe.
Call Sram in Chicago, and ask to speak to Ed. He is the closest thing they have to a gearhub guy. If anyone can help you out, he can.

Dan,

Thanks for the response. I spoke to two people at SRAM and basically received the same news. Although the second guy felt that if I work through my LBS, SRAM would send a new DD hub to them, which could be used to swap the guts from the new hub into my original shell. Both apparently had only heard of one other axle breaking in a DD hub. Seems like a really odd way to solve this issue, but if they do it for free, I can't complain!
