I got a flat tire yesterday from a nail on the side of the road, it was a fairly large nail, about the same size diameter then the u-shaped part of this lock, maybe a tiny bit smaller.

Does this mean I have to replace the tire along with the wheel? I'm running hybrid tires on a fuji absolute 4.0, about an inch wide or so, not road tires, but not MTB tires either. Also, the flat was on the rear wheel if that matters. Sorry for the bad quality of the photo.

I am sure some people on here would say replace it; but let's be honest just patch up the tube, pull the nail out of the tire and you should be good to go. If the tube's completely shot, buy a new tube. The tire is fine, I have pulled out chunks of glass out of mine, then just patched the tube and put it back in.

WHAT?#!@# Just go to your local bike-shop and buy a new wheel with tyre. You get new tube AND a new tyre. :)

I would replace the tire, that is a large hole to repair in a tire, you can patch the tube and it will be fine.

If you commute, order a new tire.
My new bike's rear tire flatted twice in 3 weeks. Ordered new tires after the 1st flat. LCF, being late because of flats is unacceptable.

Wow. If I had a nail that size through my tire, you'd bet I'd replace it.

I'd put a patch on the inside of the tire to act as a boot. When pumped up, examine the hole and then decide if it's too gaping to suit you.
IF the tire is near the end of it's useful life, just replace.

Check the tire's casing cording on the inside of the tire, that's where the tire gets its strength. If the hole in the casing is no bigger than the nail try a boot.
