Introductions - just getting started

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
hi all! i am a longtime distance runner and have had a few injuries as of late and am hoping to get "into" cycling. I just bought a Specialized Allez Sport and went for my first ride (loved the rhythm)! I have flirted with road bikes before, but have always been to greedy with my running time. Any ideas as to the best way to get into the sport? I am hoping to find suggestions as to how long to ride, at what pace, what cad, how often. I dont intend on becoming a racer, but would like to find a group of people who enjoy pushing themselves. After hurting myself running I want to make sure I start out right cycling. Any/all input is welcomed. Thx.
Welcome to BikeForums and cycling. If you're not addicted yet you will be. :D
Best way to get into cycling? Just ride.
How long? Start out on short rides that you're comfortable with and increase your time/miles when you feel you're ready.
Pace? Whatever you're comfortable with, maybe 12-15 mph. Increase speed when you feel ready.
Cadence? 75-95.
How often? Whenever you can.
Now get out there and have fun.
make sure to take glucosamine, chondroiton and msm... really good for the joints.. all that running had to be killer on them... they sel it at wall-mart.. it's called move-free.

I take the glucosamine and chondroiton, all in one pill. You can get it at most drug stores, supermarkets, health food stores, etc.
The MSM upsets my stomach.
You can get G&C with or without MSM.
Hi and welcome DMB.
As a long time and long distance runner in the past, I can sympathise with your aches and pains.
I had to give up my running when damage to my left Knee (all that pounding from the road surface) made it to difficult to continue.
I switched to regular cycling as an alternitive hoping my Knee problem would hold up O/K once the constant stresses to my joints from the road surface was eliminated.
Am glad to report all is holding up well (touch wood),
Just take it steady when you first begin cycling, stay on as flat a road surface as you can find until you build up some power for cranking, avoid to many big or steep hills while you monitor the injury`s sustained from running and most of all ,enjoy the experiance.
Good luck....
