Mountain Biking - fork travel question

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
i have a medium cannondale caad3 frame that i'm building on. i have been told not to put a fork that has more than 80mm of travel on it. right now i have found good deals on a few forks with 100mm of travel. how much will this change the bike? i have never ridden this bike (exchange for a 10 year old broken frame) and i am used to riding on a small frame.
thank you

I think that your not supposed to put a fork on with more than 80mm of travel because the frame wasn't made to take the stress of a 100mm fork.
thanks for the tip. problem solved anyway, just went on ebay and picked up a 2003 psylo sl. a little heavy but everything i was looking for other than that.

arent the psylo's 125mm? or can you lock it out to less?
they're adjustably between 80-125mm, they have a lockout too.

do you have a headset reducer to fit the 1 1/8 psylo in?
its the badboy frame, has a 1 1/8 headtube. just realized this morning that i bought a non-disc wheelset and a disc specific fork. oh well, anyone want a crossride front wheel?
