I went out for a ride today. Couldn't find my new riding partner so I asked several riders directions to Mt. Tam. They all gave me absolutely confusing directions to get to downtown Fairfax. I was running out of water and had no food, so I only made it to the 4 mile marker passed the actual Mt. Tam sign before I wanted to throw up.

20 miles of any ride that I know is to/from the GG from Bayview/Hunter's Point.

Is there a section of the mountain that's a little closer to the city?

Yeah, post up when you're going, maybe you will find a riding partner (or more) for the day).

Reid is on freakmode lately. Too much energy because he isn't doing a deathride every weekend.

As soon as you pass under the bridge (san rafael bridge) on the richardson bay bike path there is a small path to your left, it the water is high you may not see it. Take this path, it crosses over an arched wooden pedestrian bridge. Take a right on the road it spits you out on, then left on HWY 1 (follow mt tam signs). After a few miles and some climbing you will take a right on panoramic highway. Follow that to pan tool road, there is a campground and ranger station here, and take the right on pan toll road for the final ascent up mt tam.
Easiest way to the top from the City that i know of.

^ Good on weekdays when no one is on the road. Very busy with cars on the weekend. There is not a lot of shoulder room and it can be a real drag with a steady procession of vehicles making their way to Stinson beach.

Zoltani, that looks good. I think that's the ass end of the route that guy gave me. If I had actually done the whole thing it would have been over a 120 mile ride and there'd be one less set of wheels on the road =/

You would probably be better off going through Mill Valley on Edgewood to Panoramic. Look on bikely.com, search Mill Valley and/or Mt. Tam.

This is the route I take (including the bike path from Sausalito, turning at Sycamore): http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/5924509 I usually return on 1.
