Hi everyone! I have been reading the boards for a couple of weeks but just noticed this thread!

I live in midtown Sacramento. I have been riding my cruiser around town for the past 2 years, but will be commuting to Davis 3 days a week starting this fall. I have ridden to Davis on my cruiser, but got a more...efficient bike for my new commute! I got an '07 Marin Belvedere on clearance at REI.

Hello April, how many miles is your commute to Davis? That sounds like a LOT of miles to be commuting.

It's 16 miles each way. It is a lot, but I'm looking forward to it!

Wow, that's more than I do. My commute is just under 10 miles one way. I really enjoy my commute, even though it involves big hills on either end!

Hi Apree -

Welcome from another newish Sacto BFer!

I almost ended up buying a closeout bike at REI, too. In the end I got something from Performance, but I did take advantage of REI's sale by buying a bunch of bike clothes and a Garmin Edge 305 bike computer.

I'm probably going to have to wait for the weather to cool a bit before trying to commute via bike, since there's no shower facilities at either of my offices, but I have at least done the ride to each - both in the 12-15 mile range.

Yeah, I'm a little bit worried about the sweat factor. I get REALLY sweaty! I can shower in the locker room at school, but my first class is at 9 a.m. We'll see what happens when school starts in a couple of weeks.

East Hill - Luckily the whole route is very flat. It's hard to find a hill in Sacramento or Davis!

Welcome, apree! Just watch for that wind on the Causeway. It can be worse than any hill because it can be a headwind both ways.

Yeah, so what's the appropriate gear ratio for a 20mph headwind? I'm not sure if I'd take hills over wind, but at least you know when you're at the top of a hill ... :notamused:

I should introduce you to some of the hills around here! Just when you think you've reached the top, you realise, heart breaking, that you have MORE hill :twitchy: .

My name is East Hill for a reason, by the way!
