View Full Version : New wheels for a tour?

My daily commuter is a hybrid converted into a range bike: it has fenders, rack, full bar-ends, lights, etc. I plan on using this 42 lb. beast for a three state tour this summer, but I am concerned with the wheels. They are Matrix 550s. I've never heard of them, but it makes me wonder if they will hold a good size load with bags and all for many miles. Does anyone know anything about these wheels? I've never carried any more than my body weight on these wheels, so I don't know what they are capable of. Or, should I just purchase new wheels? If so, what would you suggest? Don't want to break the bank since this tour will cost me some $$ to begin with. Thanks for the tips to come :)

Trek as well as Gary Fisher both use Matrix 550s and 750s on their mountain bikes. I would think that you wouldn't have a problem with the rims at all as they are built for the rigors of mountain biking. I am not sure what you have for tires but I would change them up to a good touring tire that has a smooth tread for less resistance on the road.

And that is my 2 cents worth :)

Well, I run Kendra 35s (puncture resistant) tires. They are smooth with grooves for channeling water. They don't have as much resistant tread as the originals, Bontrager 38s, but ride a bit faster with the increased pressure. I just don't want to be stranded in the middle of nowhere looking for a bikeshop. Thanks,
