Advocacy & Safety - “SPARKY” Safety Light System

Recently purchased this light here in the high desert (Mojave Ca.), works great and very bright, nice compact weather proof casing and ability to individually select any one of three or all Xenon lights, not including controlling the frequency of the strobe effects. Seems cars do move over and reduce speeds during daylight riding, thought I'd share this tid bit of information and safe riding. :)

The Sparky is a xenon strobe, which is different from LED's. It's much brighter and more noticeable. It's harder on batteries, but if you use rechargeables that makes a big difference in the cost.

My lights run on a 12V system, so I got a xenon strobe from Radio Shack for $8 and hooked it up. Drivers really give me a lot of room and exercise much greater caution around me, now. Another plus is that my particular xenon strobe (and perhaps the Sparky as well) is very effective in the daytime, so it gets round-the-clock use. My old LED's were pretty useless in the daytime.

what kinda batteries do ya'll use in that sparky? does plainview make batteries that would work? (that is a very recomended company among audiophiles due to their 9v that can be recharged like 1000 times without losing capacity.)

how long do the lights on it last? it jsut sounds kind of expensive.

It uses AA's, dry cell's is what I'm using and as for the battery life of the Sparky, I've never actually measured it. $24.00 buck's, pretty cheap for this type of visability, I do consider my hide and good health worth waaaaay more then 24 buck's. :)

yeah.. what kind of rechargable batteries are best? i may just get that schwin led one i saw for $10 until i can afford this one. batteries can really increase the cost.

This is visible from a wider angle then the Sparky plus in some states blue, yellow or green on the rear is illegal and the Lightmanstrobe has law enforcement following. The price between the two is about $2!

By the way Condor I use to live in Quartz Hill out in the Palmdale area and use to ride to Mojave. Not too much fun when the wind picked up around 2 to 3 pm. And the old thorn in the tire became an old story quick. I guess now Mojave might become a ghost town after that freeway bypass went in there. I stopped off there recently and found the town almost void of people that use to crowd the gas stations and fast food joints.

Froze, actually I meant in a general term - here in Barstow - Victorville area. Bit nicer but not much. I prefer the wind thou. Really bright out here, that's why I went with a Xenon for daylight riding and super overkill for night.Either way it's a win win situation.

wouldn't the lightman be even more illegal then? since it's used by the cops?

Never got a chance to ride in that area though I aways wanted to; I have friends in the Victorville area as well. In the Palmdale, Lancaster and Mojave area when the wind started to blow so did the sand and tumble weeds. Made for interesting riding between breathing fine sand and dodging tumbleweeds. Eventually I got smart and stopped riding after the 1st year for the remaining 5 years that I lived there, but that was mostly due to bike burnout because I had been racing for 15 years just prior to moving there and to spent time with a new child.
