Hi

Several months ago forum members suggested we get a CX model with disc brakes
even though it is illegal to race

Here it is
and on the way and should be in about 4 weeks from now

I really appreciate the ideas on bikes like this
thanks
Mike

Been waiting for this bike... Really too bad that the rear caliper isn't inboard but I understand that compromises need to be made to get this to market, what's your suggestion for a rack that works around the caliper while still providing good carrying capacity? Anyone?

Also, no inboard brake levers, correct? That's fine by me, I'll be mounting some lights there anyway...

Pretty darn spiffy. I am still planning on the titanium cross, though.

Only illegal to race if you are a pro!

I didn't see this on the site, do you have a price and spec sheet for it?

even though it is illegal to race

yeah, i hate to belabor this point, but this is how rumors get perpetuated.

disc brakes are legal for cyclocross. the only exceptions are for elite riders, and those riders know the rules governing their own races.

cute name, though.

That is a sharp bike...What brand is the wheelset?

The only thing I dislike about the bike setup is the cables on top, looks little bit cluttered, but guess it keeps them out the mud.

If any readers know the wheelset, please post a reply.

thanks..

Looks like those Vuelta XRP pros that they have on the 105 equipped Fantom Cross. Gotta be different hubs though because of them discs.

My commuter is a cross bike with disc brakes. I have a road bike and mountain bike as well but I think the cross with disc brakes is by far the best compromise for anyone looking for a bike to commute on.

I can't really see what's going on with that bike, but there are a variety of racks available for bikes with disc brakes. The shop I work in sells a lot of Bontrager disc racks, and I never hear any complaints.

yep, plenty of disc-specific racks, also the option of a rack spacer:

Thanks for the rack input, I still haven't narrowed down a product that stands out for this application.

Ditto. My 07 Romax is the perfect all season commuter.

I'd love to get more information about this bike-- I'm trying to decide between this and the Ti CX-- Is there a link to info about setup and geometry (and price)? Is it essentially the same design as the Ti but in a different material with a disc setup?

Thanks,

It's essentially the regular Fantom Cross ~$800 model ( Tiagra, 105, etc ) but with disks, look that up on their site and add $50-75 or whatever for the disk upgrade. The Pro model would be awesome with disks too, that's what I would prefer... The Ti is the pro model spec wise.

Funny nobody has mention rear spacing yet. Rear spacing please?

If 135mm, great.

If it's 130mm, there's no way anyone should be buying it. Why?

1. 130mm spaced disc hubs are little to non-existent.
2. You can't cold set aluminum to 135mm.
3. 130mm spaced disc hubs means you have to buy wheelsets from BD if the wheelset is toasted. Forget that.
4. Need to borrow a wheelset? Good luck finding 130mm disc wheelsets besides BDs or crappy Bontrager Selects (won't be available after this year when Lemond no longer sells the XC disc).

Try Velocity for 130mm disk hubs among others.

DT swiss also makes a 130 disk rear hub

So, does this have inboard brake levers or not? When can I place my order?

+1... My exact thoughts, too. I think that new Fantom dissc is gonna make a whole lot of folks very happy.

Adding 'cross bar-top levers is an easy modification if it doesn't come with them in stock form.

I can't find that on DT Swiss' website; what hub are you referring to?

any idea on price for this one?

This might be a silly question but why are the rims machined if they take disc brakes? I am assuming it is because they are mass-produced that way but is this something that could be changed? The overall look of the bike would improve vastly with all black non-machined rims...

Top cable routing is a very good idea for a cross bike. I can't tell by this image but in order to run top routing you will need to have a pulley on the seat tube for the cable to rout around and come up to the standard bottom swing road FD. Top swing deraillures that fit road or cross chain rings are hard to come by. I used a mountain top swing FD with some success but since the curvature of the plates are designed to fit a mountain ring you get some clunky shifting.

And yeah disks are not allowed in UCI races in the states but any other race is fine.
