View Full Version : Race distance?

I realize that all races are going to vary in length to some degree and that races are set by time, but what I've been trying to figure out is how many miles you typically ride in a cyclocross race.

I've read that most courses are between a 1 and 2 miles per lap. How many laps do you do over a half hour or 45 minute race (it seems unlikely I'll ever be racing for a full hour no matter how many seasons I ride for)?

i'd guess a 40 minute race comes out to about 8-10 miles. but the riding is so different from any other type of riding that i'd say you're better off not even thinking about distance.

Hmmm....yeah I was just curious. I've heard that riding cross is akin to riding at a full on sprint for 40 minutes. I figured a training goal could be to get to a point where I could sprint for the distance of a cross race.

that's a good line of thought. what i'm trying to do at first is short laps for ten minutes, short break, then short laps for another ten minutes. basically at the end of those two intervals i'm wiped.

next i'll add a third, then a fourth. then two sets of 20, then 40 at a time.

i guess i wouldn't call it sprinting, but the term "maximum effort" works. you definitely want to push your limits, especially in training, but in a race you have to keep your heart rate and breathing under control in order to sustain the effort.

Racing cross is very similar to riding a 40k time trial, in the sense that you are hovering right around lactate threshold and therefore at the edge of extreme discomfort for basically the length of the event. The difference in cross is that the course forces you to spike your HR at very close intervals, so you are never in "steady state" for very long. A typical pattern is getting through a series of off-camber switchbacks. As you approach the turns, you are coasting/braking and getting a bit of recovery, but right when you come out of the turn, you are trying to get back to full speed as quickly as possible. Wash, rinse, repeat.

Adam Myerson has a nice article about all this:

flargle made me hurt just reading thatSecond-to-last lap is the worst, because as you are getting through each section you are thinking, I have to do this again?!?!?!?

Or maybe third-to-last is worse, because you are thinking, I have to do this two more times?!?!?!?

Then again, maybe fourth-to-last is the worst....

we often don't get to see lap cards until 2 or 3 to go, mercifully...

I dont know I think the second or third lap are pretty bad becuase youve just went balls out the first lap or two and are wondering if the pace can really stay this high forever and who knows how much longer youve got to go :twitchy:

last year I sprinted on the "last lap" at our home race only to realize the officials had added an additional lap with 2 to go without me noticing

now, that sucked...

I raced 4's but seems like we did 4 laps for each outing last year
