Northern California - Cantelow Saturday (Aug 30) morning? Repeat Davis laid-back II?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I was really bummed when I missed the Davis Laid Back Ride part II, seemed like such an awesome intro to some of the community and routes here with just enough climbing to wet my feet some without it being too overbearing... so, how about an encore? I'm a little nervous to do this one by myself...
Anyone want to join me this Saturday morning, Aug 30, maybe something like a 8am start from Davis to avoid the heat? This map seems to capture it well: http://rubyurl.com/8cB6
Looks like about 1000ft of total climbing and a little over 50 miles... who's up for this at a "friendly" pace Saturday morning? I've never ridden around this area, so you experts that know the stops and stuff don't be shy ;)
If there's not enough interest for this with short notice, we can try another weekend.

UPDATE: this is actually happening
>> remember, please check out the Livermore ride beforehand, that is an awesome ride led by "BigBossMan" that has a great crowd going... if you can't make it to Livermore, here's a fun alternative
Starting point: 2038 Lyndell Ter # 102, Davis, CA 95616 (Starbucks)
When: 8am (Saturday, August 30)
Route: http://www.bikely.com/cuesheet/route/Davis-Winters-Cantelow (slightly different from link above, but same experience I think.

I'll go Monday, but leaving at 8:00 instead. 7am is a little early for me. Saturday I'm going down for the Laid Back Steel ride (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=447516). Why don't you join us on Saturday? 45 miles, 1500 feet or so. Should be a good ride.

Yeah - all the cool kids are doing it. You want to be cool, don't you?
:D

That's an excellent point and I didn't mean to compete with the other laid-back ride... pre-mature posting, my apologies :(
Unfortunately, I don't think I can make the 90 mile drive (one-way) all the way there, ride, and be back :( so will have to look for something more local... my apologies bigbossman.
In case there's any interest in this one still that for some reason can't make the awesome Livermore ride, let me know... otherwise it might be best to join JoelS on Monday (sad I can't make that date either).
Sorry again for the conflict,
-Nico
I suspect the ride you have in mind (or the original Pt II ride) would be a fun ride in the fall *after* the change-of-seasons winds have died down (like maybe around the time they do the ag burning :p) so the temps are perfect? I'd be up for it since we don't get much flat stuff around here.

Well, if you're not planning on hammering, I was planning on riding Cantelow on Saturday. 7:00 is a might early, would you consider 7:30 at least??! I need distance, but I'm feeling lazy as far as speed. Keeping at 16-18 would be great.

dude, 16-18 is hammering for me :o  ... told ya, I'm a total newb :p
I started this thread thinking a whole bunch of people might join, but I forgot about the other ride at Livermore (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=447516) and feel a little bad for setting up an alternate ride when I see a lot of effort and excitement generated for that ride (I can't make it that far from SacTown).
So, right now, even I'm on the fence on this ride (unless more people join), but if I decide to do it, I'll update here (and we can start later, even 8am) and meet. I'll watch this thread in case this happens to work out for more people that for some reason can't make the Livermore (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=447516)ride.

This is right out my back door, so to speak, but we'll be in Livermore, riding faux steel with BigBossMan, Biking Shearer, et al. What about the weekend after?
When I'm feeling especially feisty, or it's time for gratuitous pain, I'll do Cantelow repeaters. :twitchy: It takes 3 full repeats to get that same rush of exhilaration I felt the first time I climbed it -- that feeling is priceless. You'll know it, too, when you get to the top.

Ha! I'm a 'dude'! :D
I'll be riding this one anyway. Meeting someone will make sure my 'lazy' self doesn't stay in bed instead of up and out! I'll check this thread a few times between then and now. :thumb:
Um, Red doesn't know the meaning of 'laid back' :roflmao2: Cantelow repeats....

Hee! Yeah, right, you're a dude.
And you nailed it -- I don't know laid-back...perhaps that's my challenge -- to find the Zen in laid-back. G*d knows I know the Zen in hammer. ;)
When the hill is so close, you find yourself called toward it. Who am I to resist? :D

Early November? I'm also planning on leading the Capay Valley ride again about the same time. 55 miles, rolling terrain, valley and canyon scenery...

Ok, I'll start a thread on it...
Arrgggh. My wife is starting to gripe about having to get up before 5am tomorrow. Not to mention the bounty I have to pay the sitter to be here by then after working until 1am the night before. The Livermore ride is starting to get expensive for me.
If you start at 8 tomorrow, we might switch. I'll PM you.
I wouldn't be opposed to an 8am start if you guys are alright with me slowing everyone down (and doing my first climb with you) ;-) (if we do have this small group going to Cantelow, overthere & JoelS + wife, I'd be excited to do it tomorrow... otherwise I'll do another ride tomorrow and save this for another date with all of you).
updated opening post... this one is happening :) ... please remember to see the Livermore ride if that works out for you, great group for a great ride down there.

Cool... tiny but awesome group... if anyone else jumps on, PM me, I'll check my email before I head out.
See you for the 8am start! :-)
Fun time! Nico, you have GOT to change your avatar. You aren't nearly as old as that image makes you out to be. I thought you'd be in your 40's based on that picture!
My camera phone is next to useless. I cleaned up the pictures as best as I could, but they still suck. Hopefully yours worked better.

HAHA, will do! Thanks again to all of you for the guidance on this ride, I had a blast!!! :D Here are some pics from the top of the hill (you can click on them to go to the Flickr page and view even larger versions):

It was a great ride! Nice to ride again with 'I'll Never be Lost Again' Joel S and meet his lovely wife Bess. And nice to share 'Uber-Climber in Training' Nico's first hill and paceline. :thumb:
We'll do it again, I'm sure!
That only works if I've done the ride once already. I ought to try to figure out how to make a course from a road map up front. It sure did work well.
Oh, that little pitch was near 14%, then it settled out to 7%.

Hey Joel, what was the grade on the back side of Cantelow? In my mind it's like 18%, but I have nightmares that involve vertigo...lol.
It hit a max of 15%, but for a short stretch, and of course, near the top. I think I'd better get a new cassette before trying it that way. A 26 in back would be easier than the 23 I have now...
I found an online app to create a route from a map. It's pretty slick. http://www.bikeroutetoaster.com/
