anyone up for a labor day ride?
i'm thinking from rbm richardson down to the wr trail, around wrl and back?
nice comfortable pace of around 16mph or so.....?
i'd like to get out early, if possible....9ish or so?
i'll be on my fixed gear most likely, so road racers need not apply.:D

thanks!

About how many miles? The ride has to at least as long as the drive to get there.

It's about 35 miles, complete.
Hap and I missed connections July 4. <sorry about that>. I'm into it, myself. Been looking for a ride this weekend.
Only problem I have with the route is, RBM is the highest point in the route and it's uphill all the way from WRL. ;) But it's a really nice ride.

I'd love to, but I'll be in Arkansas visiting my Mother-In-Law.

we could just meet at the scholtzky's parking lot at 75 and forest, ride the wr trail down around the lake and back.
it'll cut a couple miles off, but there's not really any uphill parts.

I've ridden from 635 down there a lot, but not sure what I'll be doing that day. The fastest I've ever made that loop was 16.0 mph, only did that once, and haven't done it since. What I manage depends on temperature and wind.

I was just complaining about the net elevation ;) Cuda's route is really nice.
It'll probably be hot later in the day. Meeting at RBM is fine with me, keeping in mind they'll be closed (holiday). There are plenty of places to eat breakfast.
I'll be filling my camelback AND a bottle cage for gatorade. I've replaced the brakes on my bike, so need a nice ride to test them.

There are water fountains around White Rock Lake.

My daughter just graduated high school, and both she and my son were in band. So this is the first time in 7 years that I don't have to go to the Labor Day parade. Might go anyway just to watch it, for a change.

[There are water fountains around White Rock Lake.] - Yeah, well if YOU drink out of them first, I'll watch. Then get you to the hospital when needed. Those things are just nasty.
But I'm into riding Monday AM around 9ish starting from RBM Campbell.

WRL on Labor Day will likely be a mad house. Sorry, but I'll be finding some quieter roads that morning.

can't be any worse than my 4th of july ride.
it was fine.

The last time I was out there on a Saturday morning, it was busy with roadies, not picnickers. Getting down there at 10:00 or so should be fairly calm.

I'm predicting it'll be FINE! Not too crowded. Not too hot (so long as it's early). Hap? Wanna name a time? You mention 9ish, wanna make that official?

thats great with me.
leaving from rbm or forest/75?

Let's meet at RBM on Monday morning 9:00. Various weather are predicting low 90's as the high, so it'll still be not-terribly-hot by the time we're done. Since it's a holiday, RBM will be closed, and since it's Monday, Ye Old Butcher Shoppe (Buffalo burgers) will be closed. But I'll be there at 9:00.

Sounds good to me. I'm bringing a buddy that rides an mtb. I'll be on the fixed gear. 9am it is. Who all's in? Just me and jim?

I just got back from riding down to and around the lake from my house. White Rock Lake wasn't at all crowded, no problem getting around. Didn't seem too hot, though humid. I stopped for a breather down on the south end of the lake and couldn't feel a breath of air moving. Stopped again on the hill on the north side of the lake and there was a nice breeze blowing there (although a headwind now!).

I bonked really hard on Saturday. Not enough water, not enough food, 97 degrees, and was up around Central and Spring Creek when it happened. Had to seriously limp back to Wylie after re hydrating and eating.

Went for a recovery ride this morning and my legs are just plain and simple dead. I think I'm taking tomorrow off save for a short mellow spin around town.

You guys have a good ride, and be sure to report how it went.

changed my mind.
i'll be on the single speed.
anything over 30 miles for me kinda becomes a bummer on the fixed.
the schwinn also has water cages!

As y'all can see, I didn't make it out there, went to the Labor Day Parade with my daughter and two dogs instead. It was good too. Hope y'all have a good ride. I may be down around the lake somewhere this afternoon again.

If you find yourself in that position in that area again, give me a call...I'd be happy to provide SAG support if I'm available. Hope your doing well today.....Sounds like you got some mileage in!:thumb:

I biked into Wylie and back today. Would have called and said howdy, but decided, after restocking liquids and snacks, that I'd better get back before traffic got going. Kirby Rd and Murphy Rd were unexpectedly easy to deal with. Nice smooth 35 mile ride.

On of these sundays (when I'm feeling especially masochistic) I'll ride out there and add the route up to the dam to the mix.:D

The drivers out here are surprisingly courteous. I understand why so many group rides head this way.

Thanks for the SAG offer. I didn't think well on this one, hadn't eaten in a while, it was 97 degrees, and it was longer than my usual mileage. I are Einstein. That being said, RBM is my goal next weekend, so we'll see, lol.

I dropped by RBM this morning to put a few faces to screen names. I had to drop my daughter off at work anyway and was well over half way there. Happy Robot and his MTB buddy (sorry his name escapes me)were there and I met Jim 10040 as well. Jim has a great Univega Gran Tourismo, and HR's Madison is awesome, almost makes a guy want to try single speed. Everyone got to meet Bosephus, the newest member of the family, a 9 week old Blood Hound. He was a huge hit in the parking lot. If I were single I would take him everywhere I went, lol.

Hope the guys had a great ride. It was a nice day for it if your legs actually work.

Well, I did make it down to White Rock Lake this afternoon. I took the cargo trike, and started from Valley View Park rather than RBM.

The nice thing about a compact bicycle is that you don't need a bike rack. Just put it in the back of the ol' SUV. You might need some steroids, though.:

Out at Valley View Park, ready to take off:

Stopping to smell the roses on the way down to the lake:

Taking a little break down by the lake, just ate the jar of Mandarin Oranges:

Around the south end of the lake and starting back up, by the boat docks:

This is what was in the cooler. Drank 2- 32 oz bottles and 1 24-oz bottle of Gatorade, plus some of the melted ice that was in the cooler. I stopped by one of the soccer fields, which was unused today:

Left at 2:28, got back at 5:12, maybe 23 miles? So around 8.5 mph average for the trip, including several stops.

I guess I went to the wrong RBM. I met up with a group leaving there at 9:15 and rode with them for a lap, then they seemed pretty eger to get back , so I did a couple more laps of the lake. I had my mountain bike on the car, but had forgot my map of the DORBA trails. No one I tried to ask at White Rock lake had any clue where any mountain bike trails were, except that they had "heard of one in Grapevine somwhere." I assumed the guys riding Specialized FSR's would have some idea, but was wrong.I stopped for lunch, then headed out for two trips of Northshore trail. Then got lost as usual on Horseshoe trail ( I have got to ride out there with someone who knows how to get a full lap) Then headed over to Knob Hill for two laps before heading back to the house.

This ride was leaving from the Richardson Bike Mart in Richardson, off Campbell. From there, they were zigzagging south on streets to work their way down to Valley View Park just north of 635, which is where I started, and riding the White Rock Creek Trail from there down to White Rock Lake, then around the lake and back. They weren't riding from the RBM on Garland Road in Dallas, which I assume is where you were.

I'm not too up on the mountain bike trails myself. One of the more popular trails is the North Shore Trail at Lake Grapevine, near the north end of the dam, which is probably what the folks at the lake were thinking about. If you happen to be out there, check it out. It's about 9 miles long, about 95% flat and easy with a little whoop-di-doo every half mile or so. I've never ridden it, but I've walked it several times. You may find better trails back towards Fort Worth, though, so I don't know that it's necessarily worth the trip from Paradise.

CM,

Every one headed out right at 9:15, which is also the time headed home to finish my yard work.

Sorry to have missed you, and look forward to meeting some time in the future.

Yes, I know Northshore trail in grapevine well. I just wish someone could tell me how to get to the back end of it without having to start at Rockledge park. Everyone I've asked said they know how to get there, but can't tell me the road names. I ride Northshore, Horseshoe, and Knob hill if I'm going out that way. Horseshoe and Knob hill are pretty easy and I'm usually spun out, but I really like the rough parts of Northshore. They are a good break fron Sansom Park. I was hoping to check out some of the DORBA trails since I was in town. I have been to OCNP and Boulder, but couldn't remember how to get to them.
