Best Christmas present ever? I think so.
I've heard of at least two British riders that have suffered that exact injury recently, and both are back racing or will be soon, so there's hope for you yet. Heal quick dude :)
Geez greywolf, rotten luck mate, hope you heal okay. What did the doctor say about your future riding?
What are you gonna do hangin' 'round the house all day? You gonna be able to stay outta trouble? :p

Get better soon! I'm very glad you're still just an old greywolf and not the Great Whitewolf in the Sky. Take it easy, and try to relax.
Gosh, sounds quite a bit like a fall I had last year. On Jan 1, I was riding and turning very slowly in a parking lot and fell on a wet patch of pavement. Must have been some oil on it because it was like going down on ice. I landed right where you did on the ball joint of my left hip. It hurt. But I got back on the bike and rode 11 miles to home. I rode into the driveway figuring that I had shook it off. I got off my bike and darn near fell over. I could not support weight with my left leg. Turned out it was just a very severe bruise. I guess a little harder and I would have had the same injury you had. I was on crutches for something like 3 weeks.
Good luck and I hope you will recover soon.

I'm hoping to be riding to work again in 10 weeks , I don't know if that is too optomistic or not ???? but its early days yet though . Thanks for your kind words & concern ,it realy does all help :)

Heal well and quickly!
Cool that you are still together mate. I know from experience a couple decades ago what a pain in the arse that can be. I was laid up with both legs in traction, and the docs talking about pins plates and screws. I was young enough that my body healed quickly, today, I don't think I would have that sort of luck.
How are you to stay fit for 3 months without riding?

Its 2 weeks since my crash & I'm hobbleing around quite well on my crutches , yesterday I overdone the getting around, especialy the stairs up & down thing & I paid for It last night as I had a very broken sleep with the twingy pains pulsing through my leg till the early hours of the morning! I think its going to be quite a while before I can ride my bike again or go back to work  But I start working with an occupational theropist soon so thats hopefull ?? I've told the accident insurance that I dont have a car so as to get me back to work they have to get me riding again or I won't be able to get there! Ive been keeping myself busy for now sorting out all the insurance (ACC) tangles that go with an accident  I saw yesterday that the concrete slope on the path where I had the fall is all marked with marker paint , may be the ambulance guys complained as they had quite a job getting the stretcher on wheels thing up it , they nearly tipped me off a couple of times  How do I calm my twitchy legs ? I've gone from doing 2hrs+ a day on the bike to zero & my leg musles have become very restless, any one else had this problem when laid up ? Anyway that all for now . greywolf
Hi greywolf; sorry to hear of your accident and I hope you don't go too stir crazy, but I did want to let you know of a bit of good to come out of your incident.
I'm a newbie here, and to cycling somewhat. Haven't ridden in about 20 years.
I was trying to decide whether or not I needed to spend the money on a helmet.
Now I know. ;)

Glad you decided to get a helmet Artie, I only wore one because we are required by law to here in N/Z but now I'll wear it because I want to ! spend a bit more & get one thats comfortable & lets plenty of air in & out . I'll have to shell out for a new one now but thats cool ,it done its job OK.& I've got a while to save for a new one
The leg is still giving a lot of pain especialy along the surgical cut (about 8 ins) but I have got a lot more movment now! I have got my 1st physio. appointment on Wed. so that should be interesting  .I'm doing one leg squats between the crutches with my good leg trying to keep a bit of condition in it .

It's nearly 4 weeks since my crash, I've gained a lot more movement in my leg since I started phsyo. I shall be starting aqua-thearapy in the pool & gym. work later this week ! The therapist's seem pleased with my progress so I'm looking forward to a full recovery ,I've just got to find out were the missus has hide my bikes
The other thing was I had my accident @4 in the afternoon on my way to work ,it was raining but there was quite a lot of traffic around & I lay there on the ground for 20 mins till a fellow cyclist stopped & used his mob.phone to call an ambulance & waited with me till they came. Thanks Paul, but I find that sad to think that no one stopped , more than likely because it was pouring with rain & they thought " oh well some one else is shore to help" but there again thats fairly typical of the selfish attitute of most motorists here in N/Zealand

The saddest thing is that I don't find it terribly surprising, and that's not intended as an attack on you (who deserved better), but merely a comment on the society in which we live.

Absolutely horrifying. Donīt they have a Good Samaritan law where you are? If not, they certainly should. Itīs sad when people will ride by someone in need and not be affected in the slightest. Iīm surprised they didnīt try to run you over in the process. :(
Iīm glad to see youīre healing and still wanting to get back on the bike. Be well.

6 weeks now since my crash,I'm now walking on one crutch for 1k at a time ,the therapist started me on hydro-therapy in the heated swiming pool this week, next week I start in the gym. & on the stationary bike :D The occupation therapy want me to do 2hrs every other day at work (in the office behind a computer not out in the rail-yard where my job is) so I "keep in touch" with the work force !! Little do they know I'm better at crashing 'puters than crashing bikes
So things are progresing quite well ,I don't know how long till I can ride a bike again but I'm getting there ! I 'spose when I start again it may be easier to start off on a more upright type bike with ordinary platform pedals e.g my daughters city-bike ?? Any-one had experiance returning to the saddle after an accident ??
Glad to hear you're making progress greywolf, keep doing what the doc's tell you to do and keep smiling. You'll be back to your old self before you know it.

I hope you're well on the road to recovery.
I'm two weeks into recovering from a crash myself (broken collarbone) and can't wait to get the bike on the trainer in the garage just to keep fit. I saw an orthopaedic surgeon today who reckoned I would be off the roads for up to 12 weeks. I hope to prove him wrong.
What bums me out the most is I should have finished day two of the Northland Twin Coast Cycle Challenge today, and be lounging about in Opononi as I type.

3 years ago I tore the tendon in my knee last day of Feb. it was May before the Dr. said I could ride. See how it goes on the stationary bike. Once I started ridig it wasn't long before I was riding as long and fast as I could before the incident.
Good luck
Joe
