Touring - DIY Carradice QR

Another little video tutorial...a DIY Carradice quick release!

I have to say that I'm not impressed by this fix. Not only is the bag free to jiggle around (which would send me crazy) but you are left with two gaping holes in the top of the bag. I mean, why bother when it's easy to fit one of these if your saddle has no saddle clips.

I think the QR aspect is what it's really about. It's an ingenious modification, but the way it jiggles also
worries me a bit. I'm not sure how good it would be for anything but the lightest of loads. I also noticed that in the video the buckles on the seat straps are outside the saddlebag which is not the best place for them. Part of successful saddlebag mounting is getting it tight to the saddle to reduce sway.
With the buckles inside the bag the bag can be tightened right up to the the seat.

It only takes a minute or so to undo the seat buckles anyway so I've never bothered with any QR mechanism.

i would venture to say that it really doesn't jiggle nearly as bad as you would think...between the weight in the bag, the seat post strap and beautiful scenery while on tour, the issue disappears into the background...

it really is about the QR...if you have multiple bikes this is a good way to transfer bags between bikes without buying multiple QR blocks, etc., also, when you're taking the train or bus to get between locations it makes it easy to pop off the bag while in a hurry to make a connection....

as far as load capacity, it's pretty robust...it's a boat cleat! he has toured with a full saddle bag and tied down bottles of water on the D rings outside with that set-up...

For me QR isn't an issue, I'll just keep using the straps. Old Skool man, Old Skool.

Well if the quick release is what you want then I already use the Carrardice 'SQR' saddle bag uplift.

i have the sqr uplift, but they're hard to find on this side of the pond....also $30-$40 for a mounting block on each of my bikes is a lot of $$
