Mountain Biking - mud tires

Right now I have IRC Mythos XC tires(or is it tyres?) on my bike. Went for a ride about 20 minutes ago and it started to pour halfway through :eek: .

Today I found out that my tires aren't the best for riding through 3-5 inch deep mud. Are there special tires out there for mud? I don't have a problem with the rain(goretex is the best :) ) but my tires just got clogged up and slippery. I have about $80 for a pair of tires right now but I might be able to get a little more(if needed).

Well I dunno if any tire will be good in 3-5inches of mud, but I had my first ride on some Tioga Factory DHs last weekend and they did great in the mud. They come in 2.1 for xc styles.

I was thinking of a pair of Hutchinson Scorpion Gold Elite's.

Ill take a look at the Tiorga Factory DH's though.

I've heard good and bad about the scorpions. Ive never ran them so I dont have a fair opinion.

Panaracer Fire XCs are tough to beat for an all around tire.

an all around tire is good too! Ill have a look at all three next time I go to my LBS:D

Can't beat Michelin tires for the mud... they make a downhill mud tire that's wide and SUPER knobby with big voids that is perfect for your application. The compound Michelin uses sheds mud better than any tire I've tried.

do you know the model or are you just talking about their downhill tires in general?

the panaracers in 3-5 inches of mudd is not a good idea. Doesn't shed that well. I think that 1-2 inches of mudd is all it can take but othre then that its a good all around time :D

do you have disc brakes, btw? otherwise id be wary about riding in mud... that stuff will chew down your rims like nothing

Maxxis Mobsters are great mud tyres. I have a high roller and mobster on my bike and if you look at the high roller after riding mud, it is all clogged up. If you the look at the Mobster, there is no mud on it at all. It just spits it off.

Mobsters come in 2.7, 2.5 and 2.3 so theres quite a range

geax makes some really, really, really good tires for muddy condition... check out mtbrreview.com

I only have a rear disc brake right now. My front fork doesn't have mounts.

What you need for a mud tyre is a narrow one with knobbles. Narrow tyre to cut through the mud to the firm ground below, and the spiky, knobbly bits so as not to clog up, get grip, and push the mud out sideways. Two tyres I can recommend. Conti Cross country in 1.5 : Not that knobbly but the thin tyre makes it work. The other is Panaracer Fire Mudpro's in 1.8 : This does work. Very knobbly, thin enough to cut through and does not clog in even the thickest mud.
Only problem is to sort out the pressures, as this is critical. Too low on a thin tyre and Snakebites, too high and although will still work in mud, they get sketchy on hard pack (Even Dry Hard pack). Other point to remember is the thicker or deeper the mud, The faster you spin.

Mobsters are terrible mud tires. They are made for hardpack conditions, but also work well on softer trails without a lot of deep mud. They are no good in the mud because they have small knobs down the center of the tread which dont dig into the mud. The knobs are smaller, and ramped to work best in harder packed conditions. I can say this because Im running a mobster right now, and while I like the tire, I would rather have something out when I go to a muddy trail.

Generally speaking, for a mod tire, you want large/long knobs that are well spaced apart to allow mud to shed. Look at any good tire thats made for mud conditions and you will find this.

I would suggest a maxxis wet scream, or maxxis swamp thing for freeride/downhill riding, a tioga black turtle for agressive trail/freeriding, or either the geax blade or continental survival for xc useage.
