I posted a thread a while back that said I was moving to Medford. **** happened, and now I'm moving to Mission Hill. I know the area isn't the safest, but I was just wondering how unsafe it actually is. Like, would I be able to ride my bike home at 2 or 3 in the morning?

Hey there. I don't have too much familiarity with Mission Hill as I lived in the Fenway area when I was in Boston, though I did have plenty of friends who lived there. None of them stayed there more than a year. They all ponied up another $100 to $300 bucks a month and moved to Brighton/Allston area.
From the few times that I've been there, I personally wouldn't want to be riding my bike through there at 2AM.

I pretty much agree with Joes in Boston. Part of the Harvard Medical School / Longwood Medical area fronts onto Mission Hill, so perhaps that area might be safer at odd hours. We live in nearby Fenway / Kenmore Square and my college age son, now and when in high school, despite my protests, I think did sometimes ride that late home from Mission Hill. I wouldn't ride Columbus Ave, until at least about 4:30 AM.

i lived in mission hill for a few years and now reside in dorchester. the hill is not nearly as bad as it used to be. the influx of medical students and northeastern students forced alot of the locals out. its more of a student ghetto than anything else, similar to allston. if you live hillside rather than on huntington its a bit more sketchy. you should have no problem riding your bike late. like with any other urban area keep your head down, mind your business, and you will be fine.

iloveboston describes the Mission Hill neighborhood pretty well and we are in agreement about the area around Huntington Ave.

I lived on the hill for a year and now live in JP but work in the Longwood medical area. I bike though that area quite a lot. Basically... it's not a terrible neighborhood but it's not a great one either. The South Huntington/Hillside area is a little extra sketchy but for the most part just be careful and stay aware of what's going on around you and you should be fine. Individual milage may vary I'm a big guy and haven't had anyone give me a hard time in the eight years I've been in Boston.
