Fifty Plus (50+) - Are you really in this generation?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

How old would people perceive you to be?
For example, do you wear a baseball cap (bonus points +/- for backwards), a visor, a porkpie or fishing cap, a fedora or a cowboy hat. Perhaps you wear no hat at all.
Are you with the Borg and have a bluetooth attachment (bonus points for blinking lights), an i-phone, a credit card sized texting machine in a pocket, a holstered cell phone from some previous incarnation or perhaps a 3 watt bag phone with plug in whip antenna?
Do you wear sandles, crocs, sneakers (bonus for high top), loafers (bunus for penney) or wingtip shoes?
Would we see your underware sticking out of the top of your jeans, are you a plumber or do you have suspenders or bib overalls. For that matter, do you wear jeans or is it all myrical fabric for you?
When you enter the LBS is your first stop in the Carbon Road section, The Full Suspension MTB section, The older used bikes in the back of the store section, the Downhill 40lb 12" travel section, the BMX section or some other?
Is your helmet primarily Silver/grey (pink fits into this catagory for the ladies), Red, Black, Flat black with round holes instead of slots or invisable?
Do you wear T-Shirts........have they got nasty slogans on the front? Perhaps sweatshirts (bonus for hoodies indeterminate at this time), or button down collar shirts. Can you still wear no shirt, hold a can of beer and wave at others with a straight face?
See where the generation gap really lies.

Never wore a hat except when I was in the Marines- but bike rides and a cotton cycling cap worn back to front. Mainly to stop scalp burn/ or to keep it warm/ or tp stop sweat running down the face/ or to keep the sun out of my eyes at PIE stops.
Whats Bluetooth? Blue tongue is appearing in cattle over here- but I don't want to stop smiling on the rides.
Crocs definitely.
You wear underwear?
LBS and it is definitely the Wheel section. I have enough bikes- but have a spare pair of Aksiums that may fit onto a Cyclo-Cross if I can get the frame at the right price.
One silver helmet and an Anthracite and more slots than material in the front- Never looked at the back of the helmet
Do wear T's but they have to be quality ones. Animal-No Fear-Nike are the favourites.
No beer- but a good cognac or Bottle of Cote du Rhone and I am happy.
Whats this generation Gap? Has it got a hill in it?
No hat, except when sailing or at the beach.
I barely have a cell phone. I wish to hell it were analog, because AT&T coverage is so bad. All, in all, I miss pay phones - much more convenient, and they usually worked.
Sperry Topsiders for casual; wingtips otherwise.
I don't own any jeans.
I look at European utility bikes.
Blue, with sort of slots.
Button down collar shirts.

I like to style with a lime green leisure suit complemented with a white belt and saddle shoes. The only problem is that my natural good looks combined with my incredible fashion sense seems to intimidate the ladies. They're so awestruck that they avert their eyes every time I come around.

at work... shirt, tie, slacks and birkenstocks.
at home... baseball hat or skully; oakley's; adidas, asics or nike running shoes; jeans or cargo shorts; nasty old t-shirts and hoodies; bluetooth; mp3 player;
riding... full kit (brightest possible colors i can find - except for 50+ jersey); nuclear yellow skid lid; no phone; no radio; no mp3; no freddin' round here.
at the LBS... don't really have one, but when i go to the city i usually go to the road section first, then the MTB section... then the "goodies" section...
it is a rare occasion when somebody from work recognizes me away from the office.... but it's been that way all my life.... the job is the job.... the rest is my time....
be well,
jim
I'm old enough that I no longer worry about whether I appear to be cool, or in style, or whether I own the latest gadgets. I'm just me, trying to get by, day by day, and enjoying life, to the best of my ability.

Are we going to get an answer on where we stand at some point? I believe I know what generation I belong to. “Boomer”
1. Unless I am riding I wear a baseball cap or a modified bush hat. I live in the desert and the sun is a killer without a hat.
2. Blue tooth and a Holstered smart phone.
3. Everyday wear, Nike, New Balance, and Asics Cumulus. Long pants situations I wear Bass casual shoes and Rocksports. I do have one pair of wingtips in case someone is getting married or dies.
4. I doubt if you would ever see my underwear over the top of my Levis. I wear cargo shorts when it is hot and Levis when it is cold. For a casual dinner I wear Geoffrey Bean. When I bike I wear Bibs unless I am on a dirt trail I then I wear cargo shorts. At least for now.
5. I go to the accessory section. I try and stay away from temptation.
6. Silver Grey. Long slots.
7. Yes I wear T-shirts. Some plain some with pictures and a few with words. Normally picked up on my travels or sporting events. One classic Doors T from the Cow Palace. Van Heusen for dress and casual wear.

I usually pay no attention to these things. Of the things that you listed, I have no idea what any of them would "say" about someone.

Baseball cap - bill to the front - only when out in the sun for extended periods of time (doing the job that my hair used to).
Blackberry & Bluetooth required by and paid for by work. I pay little attention to them evenings or weekends.
Sneakers, cycling shoes and flip flops in that order.
Jeans, shorts and cycling shorts in that order.
Discount/closeout table.
Commuting helmet is gray w/ visor, road helmet is red, gray & black w/o visor. Both have slots.
Polo shirts at work. T Shirts (no nasty slogans), jerseys/wicking Ts for riding and Hawaiian shirts when I dress up.
And I have no problem wearing no shirt, holding a can of beer and waving at others with a straight face if I'm on the back of a boat (somehow, that's the only place it feels appropriate).

I'm not sure how these questions add up. However, I know which side of the generation gap I'm on. Today I used a picture of Clyde Crashcup (that's Crash for Crash and Cup for Cup) in a powerpoint slide about one inventor taking credit for another's invention. No one recognized him.
Hat: usually none, sometimes a bush hat (safari hat? crushable hat with a brim) in the rain or the garden.
Are you asking about those cockroaches people wear in their ears now? No way. I have a cell phone somewhere but don't try calling me on it.
Sandals. I forget what I wear in the winter.
Jeans is a miracle fabric--they hold the tummy in better than most pants.
I don't think there is a Carbon Road section in any LBS I'm allowed into.
My helmet looks like half a shiny blue bowling ball, with a few slits in it. But I just ordered a new one because no packages had come for me in almost a week.
I wear an endless array of T-shirts purchased at student group fundraisers or as souvenirs from vacations and protest rallies. My favorite: We Have Determined That Your Whole System Sucks, from Rage Against the Machine.

Pre-Boomers
There are some of us (well at least me) in the 65+ generation who sometimes are left at a loss by the discussions of the nearer 50 crowd.
I.e., I've never tried MJ, don't know hardly any of the musical songs thrown out (I mean, I am of the Peter, Paul and Mary and the Kingston Trio generation), we didn't drink much, if any in college, etc., etc.
HELP - I REALLY need a 65+ forum.
As far as the questions asked by maddmaxx, mostly I am a bit clueless.
I wear a full brim hat.
I bought one of the very first 3 watt cell phones, but have progressed far beyond that, but not to the bluetooth (although my phone is equipped with BT), and no IPhone, etc. What is a Borg?
I generally wear a modified sandal-like thingie - sort of a cross between flipflops and crocs
Sleeveless shirts as much as possible.
Helmet color is whatever was on sale - preferably closeout - at Nashbar.
Heck, I think I will end it right here - I wouldn't want to give you folks any more ammunition!

Wear a baseball cap when working in the yard. Othewise, I wear a Western Hat.
I have a Bluetooth to use with my holstered Motorola Krzr.
Wear Florshiem Loafers for work. New Balance sneakers for causual. Nocona Western Boots everywhere else.
Underwear showing outside my Jeans? Never. Bib overalls to work in the yard. Dockers for work. Wranglers for everything else.
Carbon Road section
Silver gray. Matches my hair.
T-Shirts, Golf Shirts and .... No!

How old would people perceive you to be?
Most people perceive me to be a little bit younger than my actual age. I'm not your typical 65 year old great-grandmother.
For example, do you wear a baseball cap (bonus points +/- for backwards), a visor, a porkpie or fishing cap, a fedora or a cowboy hat. Perhaps you wear no hat at all..
I keep a baseball cap in the car for those times I can't control the curls after a ride. I seldom use it.
Are you with the Borg and have a bluetooth attachment (bonus points for blinking lights), an i-phone, a credit card sized texting machine in a pocket, a holstered cell phone from some previous incarnation or perhaps a 3 watt bag phone with plug in whip antenna?.
No bluetooth. I'm heading to the store tomorrow to upgrade my cell phone to a Palm Centro.
Do you wear sandles, crocs, sneakers (bonus for high top), loafers (bunus for penney) or wingtip shoes?.I wear sandals, crocs and low heels. I own sneakers but seldom wear them. I probably wear my cycling sandals more than regular shoes in the summer:thumb:
Would we see your underware sticking out of the top of your jeans, are you a plumber or do you have suspenders or bib overalls. For that matter, do you wear jeans or is it all myrical fabric for you?.My underwear does stick out above my jeans....but the jeans fit below the waist and they're always covered by my top:)
When you enter the LBS is your first stop in the Carbon Road section, The Full Suspension MTB section, The older used bikes in the back of the store section, the Downhill 40lb 12" travel section, the BMX section or some other?.I head straight to the clothing section of the LBS. I can't afford another bike:(
Is your helmet primarily Silver/grey (pink fits into this catagory for the ladies), Red, Black, Flat black with round holes instead of slots or invisable?.The helmet I wear most often is yellow. I also have red and black.....can't let the helmet clash with the jersey/jacket:D They all have plenty of slots.
Do you wear T-Shirts........have they got nasty slogans on the front? Perhaps sweatshirts (bonus for hoodies indeterminate at this time), or button down collar shirts. Can you still wear no shirt, hold a can of beer and wave at others with a straight face?.I wear dress T's to work. My other t-shirts came from cycling events. I do have one that has this saying on it and I wear it often - "You may call them gray hairs - I call them stress high lights".
I'm tempted to buy one with "I don't give a rats *****" on it and wear it to work. Retirement can't come soon enough - 39 days to go!!!
I've never had the occasion to go shirtless, hold a can of beer and wave at others - yet:p
So many question, so little time, however, for what it's worth, I'm sittting here reading a 50+ thread and I've got Sinatra on the stereo.
I dislike hats (they make my head feel hot) so I wear a visor.
I have a cell phone that's 3 years old and needs a new battery. Nothing fancy but it does have a camera and lots of options I've never used.
I wear running shoes or Keen shoes every day, and I go barefoot at home. I wear "real" shoes a few times a year, on special occasions.
I wear jeans almost every day except on non-work days when I wear cotton capris in hot weather. At home I wear lounge-around-the-house capris and a color-coordinating t-shirt.
At the LBS I head for the latest bikes, then the clothes, mostly socks. I like cute bike socks.
My helmet is hot pink with white tropical flowers. I left the visor on because the Take-a-Look mirror doesn't fit on the arm of my sunglasses.
T-shirts at home, sweatshirts in winter -- my favorite being red with a hood.

I LOVED Clyde Crashcup! I had an art teacher in high school that looked just like him! Nobody remembers him (or Leonardo, his assistant) but I can still hum their theme song!
ball cap bill front except when shooting a rifle, hardhat at work or sombrero
Blackberry need it for work, no bluetooth
jeans in the winter, too hot in the summer
leather boots (manly footwear), sneakers. no roman sandals or crocs
keep my drawers to myself
if there are used bike at a shop that's what I look at first
road helmet is blue and white, mtb is a tan skater type(I frequently crash)
t-shirts when not working or taking my wife somewhere fancy enough to require a sport shirt, only 1 semi nasty "If You Don't Like Hank Williams, you can Kiss My ***"

How old would people perceive you to be?
I don't know and don't care.
I dislike hats, but since my rosacae blossomed, I've been forced into wearing a baseball cap. The brim faces the sun, so it may be forwards on my head or backwards to cover my neck. Most typically, I wear my Caterpillar hat. It suits Arkansas, and it was sent directly to me from the Peoria HQ for making them some award-winning multimedia training material.
I just bought my first cell phone this month. I carry it only when necessary, and it's the bare-bones bar of soap style. It cost $5.00 at Best Buy.
I wear classic Vans deck shoes. The official shoes of the Zephyr skateboard team. I have a pair of wingtips that I bought in the late '70s. I've yet to break them in. They are for job interviews.
I wear jeans, but keep my undies out of view.
When I enter the LBS, my first stop is the parts counter, usually for spokes, brakepads or a chain.
My helmet is a Bell Metro. You guess at the color.
I wear t-shirts. No nasty slogans. I probably have over 40 of them, but maybe paid for 2 or 3. 9 of them are for Soap Box Derby. I use those as my main commuting t-shirts. For business occasions, I go for button down collar shirts. I don't think I've held a can of beer in 30 years.

People don't think I'm much over 40, and that's fine with me. I'm vain enough to enjoy that.
I wear a cycling hat or ball cap post-ride, or when I'm having a bad hair day. I love hats but they crush the curls, so I don't wear them often.
I have a Treo 755P and a Borg headset. I take the phone sans headset for emergencies when I ride but prefer not to deal with it.
I wear stylish but not cruel shoes for work and Birkenstock sandals for all non-sport-specific shoe-wearing occasions.
None of that underwear-flashing stuff for me -- it's tacky. Jeans=good. As long as they fit well.
LBS -- I head straight to the clothing section. I love new clothes.
Helmet is silver and light blue with slots.
T-shirts are for sleeping...I like tanks/camisoles in the summer, tech long-sleeved shirts in cool weather, collegiate-looking hooded sweatshirts for winter.
Off the bike I dress for comfort, not for speed.
Being in college in both 1960 and 1961 more than qualifies as having been in college in the early 60s.
As I recall, the '60's didn't actually become "The '60's" until sometime after 1965~. My memories of the early '60's were that society was still stuck in the '50's. At least here in NE Ohio we were.
Hell, they tried to fire me from my job in 1965 because I grew a goatee.:wtf:

No hat.
No bluetooth.
No phone holster. I have a cell phone, but seldom use it.
Sneakers or leather mocs with dry land soles.
No spandex, no underwear showing. Often wear "farmer John" type bib overalls.
T-shirts, yes. Slogans, no- unless you count one I won in a radio station quiz a few years ago, just has the station name on it. Since it'll help put things in historical perspective, here's the quiz:" Line from a song: 'When we met I was sure out to lunch'. For the win, what was the next line in that song?" And my answer:" Now my empty cup tastes as sweet as the punch." And though they didn't ask- the band was The Association, song was Along comes Mary, from the mid-60's. :thumb: :50: Other than that, the only tshirts I have with writing are from vacations spots, & never get worn at all.:D
LBS- nearest is ~35 miles away, don't seem to want to do anything but sell bikes starting at ~$500. I've been in twice(once to see about fenders, once about cable clips), felt distinctly unwelcome, haven't been back.
Helmet- semi-metallic blue, w/black visor on front.
The Weak Link
08-29-08, 05:07 AM
1. People tell me I look like I haven't changed in 15 years. Because I already looked really old back then.
2. A Tilley hat. That DOES look old, I suppose.
3. A Palm Centro, often just jammed in a pants pocket. Half the time I'm reading med literature on it, the other half I'm playing solitaire.
4. Got you there: either Birkenstock clogs (special ordered) or Naots. And people think I'm a rightie. Hah!
5. Underwear never is seen sticking out from anywhere on my body. I wear khakis almost all the time.
6. Choice of fantasy bike at LBS is mood-related.
7. Road helmet: red. MTB helmet: black.
8. T-shirts with slogans. Favorite: "It's all fun and games until the flying monkeys attack", given to me by an admiring daughter. Second: "Old guy" by Life Is Good.

Damn, I forgot the first question already! Oh yea,
Baseball cap always, usually blue with a MTB rider on the front, "Life is Good" on the back. Wear it backwards when taking pictures, so the visor doesn't hit the camera.
No borg bluetooth, but handsfree bluetooth in car. Yea, I'm one of those people that looks like they are talking to themselves, or the dashboard.
Sneakers or hiking boots. I hate sandals.
No underwear sticking out, usually! Cargo shorts all summer, even at work (I'ma software geek stuck in a cube in the dark recesses of the building, I can dress like crap and get away with it). Jeans all other times. Dockers if I absolutely have to.
Always stop to look at the gloves and tires. I have a thing for biking gloves and tires, weird.
Helmet is gray, well actually more silver.
Lots of T-shirts.

I wear a ball cap when at home. I choose my favorite hats depending on the daily occasion.
I have a regular folding cell phone and I have never sent a text message and somehow have taken several pictures of items I can't identify.
I wear New Balance and Northface shoes when not dressed for work. I do have a pair of sandals that my wife bought me for a cruise two years ago that have been worn three times.
Underware under the pants. Work in Dockers and button shirts and Docker brand shoes. Shorts and jeans with t shirts at home and 1/2 time no underware.
Right to the CF bikes to see what's new and what I can't have/need.
Primary helmet is silver with white trim. Race helmet is black/gold/white/silver to match team kit.
T Shirts all the time. Couple Grateful Dead shirts are favorites, TDF shirts, Pittsburgh Steeler Jersey (when appropriate) Slippery Rock University shirts when feeling nostalgic.

I guess I'm lucky, and I do consider it lucky. I had access to multiple generations in very intimate ways when I grew up. I graduated from high school in 1970, which would seem to put me out of touch with Dnvr's experience. However, I went to a grade school run by one of the state university's that was a "teacher's college." It was on campus; my house six blocks away. Every day I walked through campus to get to school and always had at least three student teachers in each classroom. So, I do remember beanie caps and our comments (that as grade school kids we thought were halarious), "Hey, Beanie. Where's Cecil?" I saw the Kingston Trio the Ames Brothers and Pat Boone perform and later met Lou Christie when my father stopped to help him change a flat tire on the way out of the county fair. I watched my parents dance in the living room to the music of Teresa Brewer, Peggy Lee and Perry Como. I listened to the debates over who was the better guitarist Les Paul or Mary Ford. At the age of 13 I worked in the university's commons where diner was served and men wore ties and jackets and women dresses if they wanted to eat. I helped my dad repair his 1948 Chevy "woody" wagon, and saw a tear creep out of the corner of his eye when he had to sell it one summer to pay the rent.
In any event, I feel pretty comfortable with a wide range of folks over 50.

How old would people perceive you to be? If they are older I am looked at as being much younger, hair still in place. If younger the grey tells them I am old, and clerks at fast food often provide senior discounts, when not.
1. Baseball hat, before daily shower, or after serious sweat, keeps messy hair under wraps. Never backwards. Also, at the pool or beach when on vacation.
2. No BT, only cell is work provided, use a Palm PDA (TX), wife has a pay as you go cell, yet my truck has inbuilt cell phone via On-star service.
3. Saddles sort of if Keens included, (toe protection), Rockports when cold, and Captoed dress shoes for work and dress.
4. No, find suspenders practical for heavy labor projects out and about.
Jeans if fit is right, also khaki types, and in different colors, not cargo type, to many pockets to search for the keys.
5. Accessories/Tire section.
6. Silver w/visor.
7. T-Shirts in summer and extreme casual, logos from places, not slogans. Otherwise plain, w/o pocket.
Dress shirts and tie when the right occasions, casual wear for work on most days, if not an occasion.
8. Gaps are less defined by age, instead by what you do with your time. And your activity level.

Oh! This looks like fun, I'll play before even reading the rest of the answers...
For example, do you wear a baseball cap (bonus points +/- for backwards), a visor, a porkpie or fishing cap, a fedora or a cowboy hat. Perhaps you wear no hat at all.
I wear a hat pretty regularly but none of the above. Favorit is a Tilly Lightweight LT5. http://www.tilley.com/detail.asp?catId=1&gender=u&extractBy=CategoryId&id=1&productNo=LT5
Are you with the Borg and have a bluetooth attachment (bonus points for blinking lights), an i-phone, a credit card sized texting machine in a pocket, a holstered cell phone from some previous incarnation or perhaps a 3 watt bag phone with plug in whip antenna?
Somewhere in the middle I suppose. I have no bionic attachments, no matter the color of their teeth. Motorola Razer (sp?) because it's small.
Do you wear sandles, crocs, sneakers (bonus for high top), loafers (bunus for penney) or wingtip shoes?
I own an example of all of the above except Crocs. I wear my Sidis more than any of 'em though and well beat up boat shoes the vast majority of the time I'm out of the Sidis and not barefoot.
Would we see your underware sticking out of the top of your jeans, are you a plumber or do you have suspenders or bib overalls. For that matter, do you wear jeans or is it all myrical fabric for you?
Yeah, I wear jeans (when it is cold out). And I suppose if I bent over just right there might be a rather plumberesque moment for those behind me. :thumb:
When you enter the LBS is your first stop in the Carbon Road section, The Full Suspension MTB section, The older used bikes in the back of the store section, the Downhill 40lb 12" travel section, the BMX section or some other?
First stop is usually the section where I hope to find whatever drew me in that day. If I just sorta wandered in to see what was going on or to check out a new store I would probably stop at whatever I came to just inside the door.
Is your helmet primarily Silver/grey (pink fits into this catagory for the ladies), Red, Black, Flat black with round holes instead of slots or invisable?
I think mine's about equal parts red, black and white... Stylish, for a bike helmet, and coordinates with my bike in a nice OCP sorta way. :D
Do you wear T-Shirts........have they got nasty slogans on the front? Perhaps sweatshirts (bonus for hoodies indeterminate at this time), or button down collar shirts. Can you still wear no shirt, hold a can of beer and wave at others with a straight face?
T-shirts? - Yes. Nasty slogans - No.
Sweatshirts? - Yes if it's cold. Got one with a hood too!
Button down collar shirts? - Yep.
No shirt standin' in the front yard chuggin a beer and waving at the neighbors as they go by? - Yeah Buddy!!
See where the generation gap really lies.
How old would people perceive you to be?
Old enough to know better, still young enough not to be caught...
For example, do you wear a baseball cap (bonus points +/- for backwards), a visor, a porkpie or fishing cap, a fedora or a cowboy hat. Perhaps you wear no hat at all.
Cap after rides to hide the helmet hair
Are you with the Borg and have a bluetooth attachment (bonus points for blinking lights), an i-phone, a credit card sized texting machine in a pocket, a holstered cell phone from some previous incarnation or perhaps a 3 watt bag phone with plug in whip antenna?
Palm Centro...Blutooth hands free for the car
Do you wear sandals, crocs, sneakers (bonus for high top), loafers (bonus for penny) or wingtip shoes?
loafers for work, Topsiders or tennis shoes (regional name) for leisure, wingtips when necessary
Would we see your underware sticking out of the top of your jeans, are you a plumber or do you have suspenders or bib overalls. For that matter, do you wear jeans or is it all mythical fabric for you?
Never, Some braces for the suits (I'm an investment banker after all:rolleyes:), Khakis for work, jeans in the late fall thru early spring.
When you enter the LBS is your first stop in the Carbon Road section, The Full Suspension MTB section, The older used bikes in the back of the store section, the Downhill 40lb 12" travel section, the BMX section or some other?
At the counter to talk to the owner and the wrenches.

Last one dark grey (cracked in a crash), currently white and silver

T-shirts from the rides I've done, generally AFTER I've cleaned up from an event ride, button downs again for work, and no shirt only if I want to start a spontaneous stampede of people in the other direction...

Walked into the bank today and they were playing The Ramones "I Wanna be your Boyfriend". My head is still in that generation. Man that was good to hear. Keep singing it - Sweet little girl, I wanna be your boyfriend.

Interesting question. I routinely get mistaken for being much younger than 54. At the ball game the other day a woman leaning and gushing on me was convinced I was in my late 30s! I was glad I had a wife to protect me - her husband looked used to it. Weird. I don't know how the questions relate to that!
I do tend to wear a baseball cap. There's that mysterious illusion of hair lack.
No bluetooth. I have a phone in my pocket unless I forget it. I still don't consider a cell phone a real phone. Although I no longer have a "home phone" - just the cell and a "magic jack" as seen on TV.
And I usually wear flip flops or running shoes. Rarely running shoes. I'm considering opening a law practice and would need to see if I have any dress shoes left!
And the usual uniform is a T shirt or tropical print over shorts, until it gets too cold. My preferred outfit is sandals, reading glasses, and a cap. Makes it easy to dress.
Entering the LBS, easy. I go and say hi to the people in it. I don't care that much about the other stuff. It's just bike stuff.
I got red/black helmet to match my bike.
T-Shirts, tropic shirts, sometimes with supplier's logos. Golf shirts. Hoodies sometimes. Fleece jackets. Whatever. It doesn't matter! I can wear no shirt and wave with a straight face while drinking a beer. Better than that, I don't even need pants. Doesn't bother me any. I would like to lose a few pounds.
I don't see much of a gap. I talk to people on the phone all day. I talk to high schoolers, elementary kids, old people, middle aged people. The most difficult are the busy middle aged people. They're the most angry, too.
Why not add some "bike specific" to the thread. One of my bikes is a SS/FG, does that make me look younger?

How old would people perceive you to be?
.
Older than I really am. I blame that on 38 years of working rotating shifts.
I look like hell.
For example, do you wear a baseball cap (bonus points +/- for backwards), a visor, a porkpie or fishing cap, a fedora or a cowboy hat. Perhaps you wear no hat at all.
.
Baseball caps, frontwards. Full brimmed hats when in the mood. Wool pull-overs in the winter.
Are you with the Borg and have a bluetooth attachment (bonus points for blinking lights), an i-phone, a credit card sized texting machine in a pocket, a holstered cell phone from some previous incarnation or perhaps a 3 watt bag phone with plug in whip antenna?
.
Bare bones cell phone.....I even turn it on once in a while.
Do you wear sandles, crocs, sneakers (bonus for high top), loafers (bunus for penney) or wingtip shoes?
.
Cowboy boots (for dress occasions), sneakers most of the time, Steel Toe Boots on work days.
Would we see your underware sticking out of the top of your jeans, are you a plumber or do you have suspenders or bib overalls. For that matter, do you wear jeans or is it all myrical fabric for you?
.
I almost live in jeans and cut-offs. My skivies are my business.
When you enter the LBS is your first stop in the Carbon Road section, The Full Suspension MTB section, The older used bikes in the back of the store section, the Downhill 40lb 12" travel section, the BMX section or some other?
.
Straight to the used bikes, or recumbents, or tandems....they're all cool.
Is your helmet primarily Silver/grey (pink fits into this catagory for the ladies), Red, Black, Flat black with round holes instead of slots or invisable?
.
One's blue, one's black.
Do you wear T-Shirts........have they got nasty slogans on the front? Perhaps sweatshirts (bonus for hoodies indeterminate at this time), or button down collar shirts. Can you still wear no shirt, hold a can of beer and wave at others with a straight face?
.
Mostly "T" shirts with stuff on them though none are controversial. Plain button down non-dress shirts are my other norm.
Shirtless beer swillin' ......sometimes, why not?
So that is who I am and that's the way it is.

People are usually surprised to find that I'm 50 -- At least as long as I keep my head shaved. I would think the totally gray goatee would be a tip-off. Most people think I'm early 40s. Of course, I think most people I encounter on campus each day think "Look at that brave ******** old man still trying to go to school.
But.... when I wear a baseball cap, it is bill forward. (Also, I prefer a graphics free baseball hat, though I do have one from the Adirondacks, and one from a Motley Crue concert (long story) .) I wear a running cap to protect my head. Also, I own two fedoras, a porkpie, a straw cowboy hat, and a straw outback-style straw hat, all of which I wear on a regular basis. I've worn hats all my life.
No Borg attachments. NO ONE looks cool with a earpiece. NO ONE! I keep my cell phone in my pocket, except when I ride (no pockets) when I put it in a holster on the shoulder strap of my Camelback.
For 10 months of the year: Margaritaville flip-flops, or, more often, my Keens. The Keens are also my riding shoe. (I haven't had clips on my bike in 35 years.)
In Winter: Merrill hiking boots.
When it's warm, shorts.
When riding: REI compression shorts
When Winter: Jeans or some well-worn khakis in a variety of colors
LBS: MTBs and upscale Cruisers
Helmet: Silver Giro with black visor.
Underhelmet Summer: Bandanna
Underhelmet Winter: Novarro spandex skullcap.
Summer Shirts: T's sans nasty slogans (most of mine are Life Is Good.) Hawaiian shirts. Nothing that tucks in. (For pretty much the same reason I don't stand around
Winter shirts: same as above, but add long-sleeve T's and mock turtlenecks into the mix.
Baseball Cap? Check.
Palm Centro. Yes.
Adidas low tops or sandles. Crocs? Yikes..no thanks.
Jeans or cargo shorts please.
Carbon. White Giro.
T-shirts...black mostly or loose fitting polo shirts.

I just dawned on me that I never answered any of my own questions.
Those people who know me by my looks only percieve me to be older. Those who know of my biking, younger.
Ball Caps always in bright sunlight, bill forward......too many stitches in my face from younger years and the all weekenders on the drag strips. (There is no sun like that on asphault).
I treat a cellphone like a piece of emergency equipment..........well maintained, never on. Too many people call me at work on cell phones, if only they knew what they sound like.
I don't understand the belt line fashons of today. I am thinking of suspenders or bib overalls. I grew up as a farmer and I just don't care what's fashonable. Jeans are worn everywhere, with jacket and tie if necessary.
At the LBS I go for the frames and parts. Usually I make a full lap around everything eventually. Have you noticed that bike prices are going up faster than gas prices?
Helmet is grey/silver. Someone hollered at me the other day for not wearing a helmet. I took it off and held it above my head and waved back. No BMX or skateboard helmets here.
As with the jeans, T-shirts everywhere unless I am denied access with one. OK..OK..maybe on occasion a polo shirt even though I don't own a horse. I only go bare chested, hold a beer in one hand and wave with the other when I need more room in the grandstand...:)

How old would people perceive you to be? don't know don't care. old enough to know better, too young to die.
baseball cap only when the suns real hot and i'm gonna be in it for a while, no logos, ever. allways forward. except when i weld, then backwards. cowboy hat when the weather is cold and i'm outside for a while, or it's snowing. looks like the one crocidile dundee wears, black.
cell phone, pants pocket, use less minutes than plan allows, tried to reduce minutes with the company. sorry that's as low as we go.
sneakers and steel toes shoes/boots if it's wet (read snow or rain) barefoot summer and winter at home, even when i check the mail. cold is a matter of the mind. if you don't mind, it don't matter.
the only one that see my underwear is my wife. ever. jeans, i don't own anything else.
when i go to the LBS, twice a year, it's to see if they have a part i might need to make a recumbent bicycle, and to see if they have started selling 'bents. so far, no on both counts.
silver helmet with slots. always wear it when i ride. now if they'll just come out with something to protect our hips, in case we fall and break one.
t-shirts. no logos. plain colors. except the one with jack on it. (from the nightmare before christmas) my wife bought and it's black. p.s. what's a button down collar shirt?. don't drink with or without a shirt.
