Touring - Arkel T-42 on a Randonee

Hey I can't find anyone using the Arkel T-42 panniers on a Randonee.

Would they be too big?

16x17x7 with 17in chainstays?

I would be buying them off the internets and can't test fit?

I am a size 11 shoe.

I have Ortlieb, but have to believe that much of that 17" is made up of a pocket that will face to the rear. I have no clearance problems with the Ortlieb at 12.6" on my Randonee. Arkel's blue print shows the main compartment top at 13" and base at 10.5". Add 3" + for the pocket and I think you have plenty of room.

You didn't mention what rack you're using but you should be ok. I have a set of T42's that I have used on a Trek 520 equipped with a Blackburn Expedition rack, which is somewhat short, and they were ok. There was not a whole lot of extra clearance, but there was enough (shoe size 10). If you have a longer rack such as a Jandd Expedition you're golden, and a Tubus Cargo should also be ok.

I have T-42's and a LHT with a miscellaneous Trek rack. Although the T-42 pannier's hook system is very adjustable for forward/backward positioning, the particular rack design limits this. The heel clearance is tight with my size 10 shoes.

IMO it really comes down to the rack you will end up using. I agree with a previous poster about the Jandd or Tubus (which I will be buying shortly).

Hi tcrook, if your Randonee setup looks simular to this you will have no problem with the Arkel T-42's.

cyberpep -- what rack is that? I was thinking of getting a tubus, but I like the look of that nice, long platform you've got there!

Edit - I meant to add -- It looks like the design is a lot better than the trek rack I have now. The rack you have doesn't seem to have the "doubled up" rails on the support struts that seem to interfere with Arkel's cam-lock system.

The rear rack looks to me like an Axiom brand.

The rack on that Randonee is a nice long flat one so there is lots of adjustment for the panniers.
Why don't you PM neilfein and ask him about the Tubus racks?

I have a Randonee with the stock rack and T-42s. The Arkels have adjustable "attachers." I slid mine around until I had the best fit. I also have size 11ish feet, and while the panniers are a little farther back than I would like, it hasn't affected the ridability in any way, so far.
