Training & Nutrition - These vitamin drinks, bogus or for real?

I drink quite a bit of water and have been trying various flavored powders than claim to add vitamins and whatnot. I've also recently discovered this stuff called Vitamin Water ("nutrient enhanced water beverage" by Glaceau) that advertises all sorts of vitamins and even if it's bogus it's less calories than a Coke and tastes very good.

But my questions is are these drinks that say they have vitamins bogus or do they really provide vitamins that your body can absorb?

Thanks

Chris

I am sure they have vitamins, look at the label to see what kind and in which amounts. Real question is do you really need those types of vitamins or not.

I drink that stuff occasionally as well (Vitamin water) I have my doubts of the health benefits as they have a TON of sugar (about 30g in a bottle). Most of the vitamins they provide are easily found in foods I eat anyway.

But in the end it's tasty and it hasn't killed me yet so I will continue to consume it.

Too much sugar. Many still have HFCS. All of them have as much calories as a bottle of gatorade, but all taste like watered down juice.

Yeah, I feel the same way - all the calories, watered down taste. The only one I like is the Powerade Option, but it's real low calorie - like 10 cal.

yup....bogus...HFCS and the supplement are in such small quantities that it's not even worth taking.

The only thing I hate every time I drive down the street is not jumping on the bandwagon 10 years back and opening either a Starbucks or Vitamin shop in an area filled with old people. Old people eat vitamins unnecessarily like it is going out of style. Starbucks has NOTHING that resembles REAL coffee, and yet they are making millions on it. Maybe I should open a vitamin coffee store?

I think eating too many vitamins is bad for you as well as not eating enough isn't it?

Anyhow I'm willing to bet that people would go to your vitamin coffee store. It seems like people will do anything now to avoid eating real food. No idea why though. I mean c'mon a vitamin E tablet or a nicely seasoned chunk of grilled fish, what do you prefer?

Propel has 40 calories and 4g of sugar per bottle. So not too bad. I like it, anyway.

I drink daily the equivalent of 8-10 propel bottles per day. That would mean 320-400 extra EMPTY calories per day that I do not need. That equates to 35-44 gr of fat put on every day since my weight now is at a stand still. Do the math and you'll see how little time it will take before those grams add up to a pound and more. If you are drinking it for the flavor, there are plenty of other things out that taste very well and have 0 calories.

By the way, given the average american diet, even a really crappy one, it is completely unnecessary to add vitamins to drinks and foods, even more so on a daily basis. A total waste of resources really. If you are really afraid you might not take in enough, just get yourself a cheap bottle of a multivitamin from the grocery store meant for children like the Flinstones wanna be ones and pop in one a day. Money much better spent and no calories either. Bottom line is we all eat too much of everything!!!!

LOL Chill. I drink like one a day. Don't think that's going to kill my diet. I never suggested replacing water with anything else.

I had one of thoe vitamin waters while I was trying to negotiate traffic during Lansing's Obama rally. Traffic was at a standstill right where some guy was giving them away. I took one, put it in my water bottle cage, and drank it as I rode. It was the purple one. Just yesterday, Meijer gas station had two for a buck. I bought the yellow one and the red one. I drink them when I need a little sugar boost. So, that's like three in my life so far. I liked them.

Is soylent green somehow related to simple green? Do they use the same ingredients?

I used to drink Vitaminwater a LOT. I don't know exactly what happened, but I just plain out stopped drinking the stuff one day. That was a few weeks (or maybe a month or so) ago.

It has a LOT of sugar for me to really think of it as anything close to water. On top of that, they don't serve it in smaller quantities either (16oz or less).

BTW, I actually like Starbucks. There are better coffee shops, but in New York, they are few and far between (at least from my area).
