I am hoping to get ahold of an older touring bike/frame. I have been searching the internet extensively, without luck. does anyone have any ideas on where I might get my hands on one of these (or a comparable)?

I have a Trek 400 that I have used for Tours. It is at least 20 years old. The frame is in excellent shape. Some of the components are not orginal. I think it is 21". I would sell it.

Quirk333 - Check out this site for older touring bikes. http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/BOBishBikesFS/
I recently saw a nice older Specialized Expedition for around 180.00 listed. I have the same frame I built up for touring and love it. I think it is nicer than the 520 and comparable to the old Trek 620 or 720. I also have 80's vintage Trek 400 and Bridgestone 400, and the Expedition is usually my ride of choice.

The Bridgestone got me through a number of tours before I got the Specialized, and it worked great, but lacks all the brazeons. I may be willing to part with it if you are interested. It is 23" and in great shape with a number of upgrades.

Quirk333, In the early 80's I toured on an Expedition for several years. It was at that time an excellent bike for loaded touring. Some even favored it over the more expensive Trek 720 (also an excellent choice). If you have the time it would be worth your while to find one. I have been looking myself hoping to find one some day. I like the vintage look and feel of lugged steel for touring myself. Like a good wine, I think older bikes gain character. Good luck in your search.
