I recently came across a 1979 Schwinn Suburban that was only lightly used for a year or so and stored in a basement ever since. I'm planning to use it as a short commute bike in an urban area. Assuming nothing is broken what its gonna take to get it road worthy again? Can you still get parts and especially tires for them?
Parts generally shouldn't be too hard to find. I think all the parts/bearings are easily and inexpensively replaced/seviced.
I think from that era they most likely use 27x1-1/4" tires. If not those, then 26x1-3/8" tires. Either way, you should have no problem finding replacements. Usually inexpensive, too.
The biggest problem may be braking, as those steel rims can be pitiful, particularly in wet weather. Kool Stop Continental brake shoes (be sure to use the SALMON colored ones!) could help. If that's not good enough, replacing the front wheel with a aluminum rim would be a good idea.
Regarding brakes, I strongly concur with Shecky. Replacing the brake cables and housings can help, as well.
