I'm in the slow process of building up a urban/freeride/whatever frame but I could use some suggestions on which rims/hubs to get. I've been looking at RhynoLites because they seem to be beefy and cheap as well as Mavic F119s. I'm about 140 lbs and not a very aggressive rider (yet). The other question that comes to mind is the number of holes to get. Since I'm kinda on a budget, I'll probably just get LX hubs or the equivalent and save up for Kings/Hadleys if I figure out the urban thing is for me.

Appreciate your help

Nashbar has Rhynolites laced to Deores with 32 14 gauge spokes for about $100 to $120 depending on flavor of hub and color. Just picked up a pair the other week. Nice wheels, beefy as all heck.

I have a mate who weighs 230lbs. He only does XC, but any speed on the trails and the first rough bit and it is retrue time. Or it was. Mavic Freeride rims(Forget the Model but were the common ones) on LX Hubs, straight gauge spokes and 36h. The last pair he bought was 18months ago. Last week he broke a spoke, and sent the wheel back to the wheel builder. All it had was a respoke. Hubs and rims still perfect. This is the same specification wheel he has had before, but the difference is the "Custom Build". Whether these wheels are suitable for Freeride, I can't say, but if you want "Indestructable" wheels, Hope Bigun Hubs on Mavic Downhill rims, 36 hole, straight gauge spokes. They are the business and carry 380 lbs on my Tandem. (and this is used aggresively off road). Incidentally I came off Rhino Lite rims to the mavics on the tandem, as I was not happy with them.

Best advice is to find a specialist wheel builder and take their advice on what to get. You will probably find that they are cheaper than your lbs too, as all they do is buy in bulk and make a good product, at a cost that is surprisingly cheap for the quality.

Rynolites are decent. I run both ryno lite xl's and mavic 321d's, 321's are signifgantly stronger but also quite a bit heavier so it is a balance you need to find... I would spend the 10 or 15$ to upgrade to xt hubs and the freewheel is a signifigant upgrade in strength and for urban this is required. Also look into 36 hole as it does improve strength.

As for future hubs. I have hadley's and love them. But then again I wouldn't spend double the money on King's.
