Bicycle Mechanics - What is the difference between a double and a triple FD?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Can anyone tell me the exact difference between a 105 double and triple FD.
Specifically the difference between a FD-5501 and FD-5504?

On a triple der, the cage is slightly wider to accomodate the larger difference between the largest and smallest rings.

I went down to my shop where I have a pair of Ultegra bikes. One has a double and one has a triple front derailleur. At a glance:
1. The triple cage has a much wider inner blade. I assume that's to lift the chain from the granny to the middle chainring better.
2. The triple cage seems to drop lower in back. I assume that's to prevent rubbing if you are in the granny and one of the smaller rear cogs.
Thanks guys------that's the info I wanted.
