Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I've been a Big Dummy stalker for several months. I work in a bike shop, so I have a dealer login to QBP's online catalog. At the end of July, there was a batch of 18" framesets in stock at QBP (as Surly's blog post (http://www.surlybikes.com/2008_07_01_blog_archive.html#3064029637285923648) indicated), but they ran out in about two weeks. That post promised more of other sizes to come in stock in a week, but I never saw them, so I don't know what happened to that. They also promised 20" framesets near the end of August, and that's the size I need, so I've been checking practically every day since then.

And then today, they showed up!! There are currently (evening of Friday, August 29) 31 in stock, with an order limit of 1. So your LBS can now order you that 20" BD frameset you've been drooling over for months since they were last available and you missed the last batch. I don't know how the order limit works, whether it's a limit of 1 per dealer for a certain period of time, or if it's a limit of 1 per order. The latter seems more likely. They ship UPS OS3, so your LBS will have to pay a shipping surcharge, and they may ask you to pay that surcharge, since they're used to getting free shipping on their QBP orders. I'll find that out with my shop when I get my order in. Monday is Labor Day, so QBP won't be open again until Tuesday, and you can bet that my order will be in at 9am on Tuesday, and this batch will probably only last a week or two before they're sold out again. Surly promised 22" framesets in stock now too, so if they come in stock soon too, all you jolly green giants can buy yours too.

For those who doubt, check for yourself at Harris Cyclery's QBP special order catalog (http://harriscyclery.net/page.cfm?PageID=49&action=details&sku=FM3067). It shows retail prices and doesn't show stock levels or the order limit or shipping surcharge, but it only shows items that are in stock, and the 20" BD framesets are there.

So who else has been waiting for the 20" size? Post your build over in the Big Dummy: My Build (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=388598) thread, or start your own as that one's pretty huge now. I'll post my build list once it's finalized; I've been working on it for weeks now and made all the big decisions, but I'm still remembering things that need to be added. Some things I need (Nuvinci hub is the biggest) aren't in stock now, so it'll be awhile before I'm riding, but I can't wait to just touch the frame!

Actually I have a question : does anyone know if QBP are shipping frames to other distributors (in England, for example) do they use air or sea freight?

I don't know. I could probably ask some guys at work tomorrow, but I'd be surprised if they know. I don't think they work directly with overseas dealers, but might be persuaded to ship something there. I'll copy in here their contact info for their "International Contacts" section of their contact info page:

One of those people will probably have the answer you want.

I've heard of people in Australia, NZ, Holland, and Austria with Big Dummies, and others all over the world with LHTs, so it's been done. You might want to ask this guy (http://bla.obda.net/wordpress/) in Austria how he got his frame. I would imagine that the shipping costs are pretty high for international shipments - this box is huge! But it's a totally unique frameset, so you may find that worthwhile. People on this side of the pond buy Thorns all the time when they could have something just as good custom made in their own state for the same money.

Hey thanks for the reply. My reason for asking is that I have a 20" frame on order with my LBS here in Ireland and as far as I am aware it comes through the distributor in England ( http://www.ison-distribution.com ). I assume they must get their frames through QBP. I wouldn't dream of getting a frame shipped from the US :) I'll try out those contacts, thanks.

Well, getting your stuff through Ison in England makes sense. They seem to stock a lot of QBP's in-house brands (Salsa, Surly, BMC, etc) so I'm sure they at least have an agreement with them. Hopefully that means that they get shipments straight from Taiwan or China or wherever, instead of having to have QBP get the shipment from Asia and then ship to them. Regardless, as far as you're concerned, it should mean free or reduced shipping for you; Ison would probably pay it. One of those contacts at QBP should be able to tell you how it really works, and if them having something in stock means that Ison also has it. Good luck!

I called Ison. They have a confirmed ETA of 09/15 for these frames. Looks like I should have mine by 09/30. Happy days.

Thanks Vik! As you know it's been a long and bumpy road. I have most of the parts I need for it now. Just missing a headset, some bars, stem, brakes and (of course) a brooks :) Still need to get the longtail kit too, but I have a source for that in Germany. Plus there's a chance I'll be in Seattle in the near future so I might wait until then and take advantage of the weak dollar :)

Woo. Just got word I'll be in Seattle 09/17. Going to save a fortune on the longtail kit.
