Check out this pic of Lance in Portugal...I've heard of a power crank type system for training...is that what this is?

Yup, SRM Powercranks they're called. Looks like Lance has got the hang of them. They use two little clutches inside the arm/BB so that each arm is independant but both turn the chainring. You have to pedal both legs in perfect circles or you go nowhere fast. Try riding with one leg next time you're out, it's not as easy as it seems.

Yes, SRM cranks are a power meter set up, just like regular cranks, but they yeild power output (watts) data. The independently rotating cranks are called PowerCranks. Lance is riding an SRM crankset in the photo.

no there is NO advantage, they are a training aid.
