A fixie rider merged behind me yesterday evening on my ride home. I picked up my pace until I felt I was ready for him to pass. As he slowly passed me, he looked over his shoulder and complimented me.

"You have a pretty good cadence for someone who rides a freewheel," he offered.

"Thank you," I smiled back.

Then I began to wonder, what did he mean by that?

:D

Of course. ;)

I was just wondering, "What did he mean by saying, 'for someone who rides a freewheel?'"

I guess some people just can't say something nice and leave it at that. Sort of like saying "You're kinda good-looking for such an ugly guy." :D

<SNIP> Sort of like saying "You're kinda good-looking for such an ugly guy." :D

That is exactly how my wife hooked me... :D

I don't think anything negative was meant by the comment. A fixed gear bike forces you to concentrate on your spin. Numerous pro cyclists use fixies in the off-season to work on their technique. It's easy to mash, cheat, and fall into bad pedalling habits on a freewheel bike. I would interpret the comment as, "you have good technique and a disciplined cadence even though your machine allows you the opportunity to cheat." My .02.

Well, this whole thread was only a lighthearted one, anyway. It never was a big deal, I kind of liked talking to another cyclist, since some of them never speak.

Don't worry about it, it's all in fun.

No worries here......Just didn't understand the reply.

I think "cheating" would be mashing a big gear so you can coast, and continue to do that sort of riding through your ride, rather than find the gearing that works and supports a cadence where you are effecient in your pedal stroke. I am amazed when I get over to a geared bike how much better I am on it. Riding FG really helps.

As Dave Letterman used to say, "Paul, you have crystallized my thoughts eloquently."

Because of my lack of experience with fixed gear I would think if you're going up a steep hill you'd be force to stand and mash, and going down a steep hill you'd spin your legs off. Enlighten me.

that's pretty much the gist of it....

tougher to ride in hilly terrain... either you have too high a gear or too low...

Oops! I guess I do cheat a little now and again!
