Recreational & Family - Shoes for longish distance rec cyclist

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I made the leap to clipless pedals. I am picking up my tuned-up bike tomorrow (where there also installed the pedals). I've got the M324 Shiimano equavalent - one side SPD, other side platform. I'm not sure what shoes to get. I've just got a hybrid bike, so I am certainly not a speed demon. I generally stick to roads or bikeways, with perhaps some brief trips on the grass or dirt groomed "trails." Generally, I go 15-20 miles on weekdays and 25-40 miles weekends, with an eventual eye to commuting (8 miles each way). Here are the shoes I am looking at:

SixSixOne Tiburon
Shimano M38 and M21
Lake M101

My price range is no more than $80 + tax or shipping. I want to be able to reasonably walk around, but I also don't want an outersoul that is too spiky - that is, overly like a hiking shoe. A 1 cm tread would be fine. Any suggestions as to which is best? Any others I should try instead. I probably should post this somewhere else, but since the bike itself is kind of recreational in nature, I figured I'd start here.

I wouldn't buy cycling shoes without first trying them on. They seem engineered more precisely than other shoes. I've known riders who were miserable on training rides because of ill fitting shoes.

Here's another recent thread on shoes: http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=45983&highlight=shoes

Try the Lake or Shimmano sandles. I spent almost the whole summer in them, very comfortable both on and off the bike.

Shimano makes an excellent full shoe that's a combo biking/hiking/walking shoe, it's that M38 you mentioned.

Second vote for the sandals (Lake version in my case but the sole is the same).

I have the Lake MX101, great shoes. They come with screw on cleat covers so if you don't want to always ride with clips you don't have a hole in the sole.

I use Nashbar's "Gonzo" shoe. On sale for 19.00 dollars this week.

They do the job and are entering thier second season.

Get the Lake MX101. I have the MX100 shoes (2001 model) that I bought for commuting (14 miles one way) and they are very comfortable shoes. I have Shimano M535 pedals.
They work well for platform pedals and walking too. They look and feel a lot like sneakers.
