"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - Racer X sighting! On YouTube!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

to you guys who love the wind tunnel, do they test drag at different yaw angles?

Whatever you like. It's a custom plate. You ask, they do.

LabVIEW....Ahhh...senior design comes back to haunt me.
Does make me realize that I could make my own wind tunnel and cobble together some instrumentation using some basic DAQ and LabVIEW and I'd have cyclists lined up around the block (around here). Even if it wasn't high zoot....it could help guys dial in setups.

Cool video. You Tube has some value after all.

Nice. RX is pretty slippery on the road bike too. Tough for me to get a draft during our little breakaway at Lago.
That kit's going to look sweet with my new bike. Wait. Did I just say that my kit will look good with my bike? Who am I, and what have I done with waterrockets?

That depends, did you finally shave your legs, chewbacca?

Man, I'm having this internal discussion this evening actually. Hmm.
What's wrong with me?

Labview sucks :fight:

Thatd be cool. Heck if I had any space around here, Id probably try it too, although my fluid dynamics are rusty to rudimentary at best.

Indeed....Maybe I didn't mention that the flashback was not a good one...think bad trip kind of thing.

I'd have to dust off some books and volumes of notes for sure, but strangely I really liked fluid mechanics. I remember at the time having a lot of really deep thought about boundry layer flow. Then I'd go get drunk and forget it all. Meh....
...but in the big scheme of things if you are looking to go low tech then all you really need is some rigging/alignment table to mount everything to, a power device/computrainer type of deal, big fan, anemometer (sp), some plywood, and a few load cells (X and Y plane), Laptop, DAQ board/multiplexer... and you'd be in business.
Sure without a ton of theory and high end equipment/calibrations none of your numbers would mean crap, but you'd be able to do 2 thing effectively....get riders into positions that maximize their power output, and get them into positions that minimize drag forces. That's all any of us really care about anyway.

I thought this was a spoof until I saw my chainring mod.
Thanks Doc!

It would be neat to hack into the wireless data stream from a powertap given that its decently portable.
I just looked at the price for an 8 channel DAQ.. Damn! I could just design one myself prototype it and build it around an 8051 or something to hook it up to a laptop.

A cheap sound card and a mini-ITX can get you a lot of DAQ for almost nothing if your required data rate is compatible. I had some students build one up a couple of years ago and it worked like a charm.

Hey, I like LabVIEW!! I don't know of a better program for DAQ acquisition (but then again, I don't work in that field).

Naw. For real low tech you just mount someone on the Thule rack on the roof...

Calibration is easy. The science comes in when you have to account for blockage effects, though as you say, if all you want is the minimum drag, it's pretty straightforward.
Maybe the nerd wing of BF should all collaborate. I'm sure we can recoup our investment on Pcad alone...
