They were probably going close to 40 at the bottom, but by the time the got to the rail had lost some speed.

Remarkably, nobody was seriously injured, though 4 bikes were totalled. I rode a madison today with the guy who slaps the ground at the end-- that's his front tri-spoke flying through the air and being caught by another rider (accidentally). His fork blades sheared off, and the wheel got pretty crumpled.

if you listen closely, you can hear the guy yell "f:)ck!" as he slaps the ground.

but hey, i already posted this in another thread... on page one of this subforum even.

And if you were listening closely some time later from anywhere within a few thousand miles you could probably hear him say it again when he saw his bike and wheel. They were pretty messed up-- now in the museum of broken bicycle parts.

are you serious? it's a sprint. mostly likely hitting 40, if not topping out.

theo bos's record-setting 9.77 flying 200 gives him an average speed of 46mph.

now i'm not saying that these guys are world-class sprinters, but 40mph is well within the realm of reason for 1/2/3s.

AVC is a really fast event. Those guys were definitely in that speed range.

And in a Keirin the motor drops them off at about 50 kph (about 31 mph), then the sprint starts.

40 mph isn't unheard of in endurance races, either-- a couple years ago a friend of mine had a speedometer on his bike at elite track nats. He saw 40 mph on sprints that he wasn't even getting points in. At the world cup event in LA in january I was in the infield with another friend who was timing the laps in the madison near the end of the race. With 4 or 5 laps to go they were doing ~13 second laps. That's about 43 mph. Nobody is on the front for very long at those speeds (and they're exchanging every ~2 laps), but the front group is going that fast at the end.

AV is really really slow though.

The track record for the 200 doesn't average over 40 and I know two of those front riders don't even ride that fast on much faster tracks. Even together I doubt they were over 40 at that point in the race.
