Cyclocross - SRAM S300 Cross GXP 175 mm 38-46t

Is anyone using the SRAM S300 Cross GXP 175 mm 38-46t crankset?

The gears are more usefull than the SRAM Rival Crank Crankset 175 34/50, but is it a high performance item? The SRAM Rival Crank Crankset is hollow, is the SRAM S300 Cross GXP?

I have both the Rival Compact and the S300 38-46 cranksets what do you mean by hollow?

Please compair the S300 to the Rival, I'm building a bike and I cant find much info on the S300.

It's funny you asked about these cranksets because I had both pulled off last night and switching them between bikes. The axle seems identical on both and are hollow if thats what you mean they switched between bikes no problems. The crank arms are little thicker on the S300 and seem a little heavier. Both arms also have a similar indentation on the inside of them, couldn't tell you if the arms are hollow though. For some reason I thought the chain rings (BCD) were the same between the two but they are not and didn't figure this out until I had taken both cranks and chainrings off, doh! Don't know if this helps. BTW my Rival is a compact and the S300 is the cross specific one.

I'm building a Soma 2X with parts from a Felt F1X, including the custom 11-25 10 speed Shimano cassette.

The gearing is less than ideal with the 50 & 34T on the Rival, I would be changing front chain rings frequently. The 46 & 38t would allow me to stay on the larger chainring 70% of the time (or more), assuming I stay between 24 & 17 mph on the flat Illinois roads that I travel.

What ringset do you prefer?

Sweet, I have a Soma double cross also, I had the Rival compact originally on the soma but 34-50 and really couldn't stand the 34 so I put a 36 on and still didn't like it, on a side note when I took the Rival apart last night I noticed on the 50 chainring it says to use only with 34t don't know what that is about. I do prefer the 38/46 better than the compact for my flat/city riding I do, that tight range is nice, if I dealt with hills I would probably feel differently though.

I'm going with the 38/46 as you suggest, thanks for confirming my speculation on this!

The hollow cranksets are called OCT. If it says that, then it is.

Maybe it's just me but the 38-46 seems easier to setup the fd than the 34-50 and seems to shift easier on my ultegra and rival systems. I always get the 38-46 dialed in on the first try, never with the 34-50 on the first try, weird are compacts more finicky to setup or am I doing someting wrong.

A 34-50 compact is TWICE the jump (tooth-wise) of a 38-46. A compact is at the outer limits of most equipment's capacity to make the jump. OTOH, a 38-46 is nothing. Not a challenge for the equipment at all.
