I just finished Michigan's fabled DALMAC bike tour from Landing to the Straits of Mackinac and the Big Mac Bridge (you can follow my DALMAC travels at http://clydesdalefitness.com)
But unlike previous years, this tour left me so seriously chaffed that, the last two days, all I remember was the pain with every pedal stroke. I was so raw I started to bleed, even with Chamois Butr liberally applied from Day Three on.
What I cant figure out is that going into this ridem I was in the best shape of my biking career. I had done other long distance multi-day events this summer and have been training at over 100-125 each week.
Legs were fine. Nothing was changed on the bike. But man, the chaffing was horrible.
My average speed dropped from about 15 to 12... I have a sore lower back from trying to find a comfortable position on the saddle and much of the joy of the rour was lost in the pain.
The only possible explanation I can come up with is I used a different pair of shorts the second day... instead of washing the best in my collection. I don;t recall any pain Day One (an 82 miler). It started on Day Two about an hour or so in.
I don't expect to ride this week so I can heal.
But what's the best bib shorts I can get? I'm a 210, 5'1-" Clyde. I don't want this to happen again.

hey --

I've had a hard time finding ones i like, but have settled on two sorts -- Giordana lasers and Assos F1-13 (i think).

the Girodanas are tougher but not quite as comfy. Assos amazing but very dear.

I'm a different shape from you -- 6'3 and 230, so your experience may vary.

A numbe rof folks love the Performance ultra bibs. They are cheap but i've never been able to get the "boys" to settle properly in them

btw, how wide is your saddle? you may be rubbing it too much

I had the saddle custom fit... replaced a Brooks B17. Been on it since June with well over 1,500 miles. I'm going to try a pair of the Assos.

Not to ask the dumb question, but you did wash you cycling shorts before you went?

I wear Ultras, and the trick is to hike your junk up front and center like the shorts are a dancer's truss.

Ok, here's something that I didn't think I'd be writing about. But are you sure it was just chaffing? I know sometimes the woman gives me a yeast infection, and just one application of that jock itch creame makes it go away, but while i have it, everything is clingy and prone to chaffing.

BTW, you don't have to reply to this post LOL

I don't wear bibs, but I wear Pearl Izumi shorts. They are much better than the other shorts I have tried. Maybe worth looking into for bibs.

A different strategy. I find liberal use of foot powder in non-foot locations, before-during-after long rides takes care of the issue. But it is like a sunburn or a blister; your body won't warn you until it's too late, so take precaution before symptoms. The hotter the temps, the more you need.

I have ridden centuries in a 90+ degree day with nothing more than the bike shorts. No gels, powders, etc.....; I just make sure to clean up as soon as I am done, and make sure the bike shorts are washed and hung up to dry.

sugio rs flex bibs (they run about 1-2 sizes small though).

best bibs I have every tried. a bit expensive at around 149 a pair, but well worth it.
