The newspaper 'USA Today' has been running a multi-part series on the "Ten Toughest Athletes." Their writers had Lance Armstrong ranked 4th. Today is the last installment of the series and they picked an NFL player as their #1 choice.

There is an opportunity on the USA Today website for readers to vote for their own selection for the Toughest Athlete from their top ten list. I, of course, voted for Lance. If you want to vote in on this poll, you can go to:

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/ten-toughest-post-survey.htm

or

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/packers/2004-02-19-favre-tough_x.htm

(In the latter, the poll is in the righthand sidebar under "Quick Question.") It would be cool if a cyclist could be the "peoples choice!"

Roy Jones is a boxer, arguably pound for pound the best boxer in the world today. he has held championship belts from middle wieght up thru heavy wieght. he is just an incredible athelete. any top 10 list in sports should probably include his name, but you know how lists go :)

Toughness isn't measured only by the strength of the body, but also that of the mind. Hence, Tiger Woods deserves to be on the list.

That said, I still vote for Lance.

I agree, but Jones is mentally tough too. Tiger sneaks in for athleticism - if they didn't have that, the list would be dominated by chess players!

Yes, Lance is on top now. I hope they don't track IP numbers, becuase I voted for him over 200 times in the past few minutes. I was able to vote about once every 3 seconds, but my wrist is killing me.

Being English, I do not know a great deal about any of your Polls on athletes. In fact I do not know a great deal about many of the Americamn sports, or their athletes. Being a Cyclist, there are certain "names" that do catch my eye, and I have a tendency to follow, and support those names. The one name that is in my Focus right now, Now that Pantani has gone, is Lance Armstrong. In fact, I would probably say that this is the one American Sportsman that is Known to most British Cyclists, and the Majority of Sports lovers around the world.

Being English, "Is Tyler Hamilton American"?

You are, of course, correct. Toughness is both physical and mental. However, there are so many other athletes that are BOTH PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY TOUGH, that it drops Tiger's mental toughness only attribute (no matter how great it is) WAY DOWN on the list, IMHO.

Having said that, I voted for Lance also. :D

A golfer included as a great athlete? Cmon, Tiger couldn't carry Lance' jock strap. There is no comparison. Toughness of the sport should definitely come into play. Towards that end, I agree, Roy Jones should be included. Boxing, cycling, long distance runners are some ballsy dudes for sure. Basketball is a tough sport in terms of endurance and skill required. Football and baseball? Nah, no comparison; they get to rest too much. Hey, maybe they could incorporate a half time for the riders in the TDF so they can rest up a bit and not risk getting hurt too much. Any maybe they should start to wear pink underwear too. Lance gets my vote and any of those guys riding the Paris-Robaiux for that matter. Tiger Woods....get the heck out of here with that crap.

You have to get a lot of pub to be considered tough, apparently. I always thought Eric Jackson was pretty tough; hard to think of anyone who has dominated their sport for as long as he has his. Then there are those maniacs who run unexplored rivers or climb high peaks; I'm not sure if they're athletes or explorers, but let's split the difference and call 'em both. Those guys generally don't have teams of doctors, chiropractors, and massage specialists following them around, either, unlike these highly paid superstar athletes. All time tough?

sorry...steve mcnair is tougher than the rest of them (including the qb of my favorite team brett favre)

he has played through fractures and multiple orthopedic injuries

he could not walk last season without pain ...yet he persevered

came back and played at a high level less than a month after having spine surgery

i admire LA for coming back the way he did after his cancer therapy....but he did not compete when he was sick .... some of the others have competed while injured or otherwise not at full strength

Brett's played through having 30 inches of intestine removed, a broken thumb, drug addiction, and the death of his father. Plus he's done it for an amazing 180 some games which automatically makes him the NFL #1 tough guy, especially when you look at the incredible numbers he's put up and the climate he plays in.

If Lance hadn't survived cancer he probably wouldn't be on the list. Besides his remarkable comeback, I don't see him as any tougher than Hamilton, Eky, or several other guys in the peloton.

I agree with Laggard. As quarterbacks go, Brett has endured as much as any of them. But I still say there is a lot of rest in between plays. You fight the pain in sets. With cycling, it's constant pain. Someone above said Lance didn't bike while sick? Guess again and let's see you ride with a temperature and while dehydrated. Underwear....Lance doesn't wear a jockstrap? I know, just a figure of speech. Hmmm, let's change that....couldn't carry his water bottles. That better? As to who the toughest cyclist is? Well, that is a matter of conjecture. They are all tough as hell as far as I am concerned. And yes, for Tyler to endure what he did during last years TDF, well, there ain't many that could do that on planet earth.

....but he did not compete when he was sick .... some of the others have competed while injured or otherwise not at full strength...

Lance certainly did compete while sick, injured and or otherwise not at full strength. His cancer didn't just happen one day and he was suddenly off the bike. For me the most gut wrenching part of his book is when he writes about his efforts to continue training while undergoing cancer treatment.

Lance is first in the USA poll right now. We all know he wouldn't quit just because he's leading. If you haven't already, VOTE!!
