Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Wheelset - LP18s or DP18s?

I've been looking at CL and EBay for a bike and coming up a bit short for my budget($150)... that and larger frames(62-64) are a PITA to find within said budget. I've found some deals within my range but passed as they had steel wheels and wanted to buy a bike with decent alloy wheels too. Also read about wheels needing possible spoke replacement after some mileage? Given this hasn't happened I'm looking to possibly pickup a wheelset and bike separately. I'm 220lbs so I think 36 spoke is the way to go(least that's what my bikeforum search-fu found). Found the following in another thread regarding budget wheelsets...

The LP-18's are sturdy enough for anything you would probably be doing, I imagine.

Did you check to see what they charge for shipping? That always needs to be put into the equation for me.

DPs are clunky, but seem to work just fine. In fact, I suspect (based on guess more than experience) that they are probably about as tough a rim as one can find. They are heavy and look heavy, however.

I have a pair of LPs that I have not used yet. I bought them off Ebay to use on a flip bike because they were so cheap. This pair is laced to a generic set of track hubs. I figure the bare minimum for such things is that they are double walled, and they are. So, I would guess they will last for a while (assuming they are well-laced).

Thanks! I was looking at ordering a wheelset from them but didn't have time to go through the checkout to see the S&H. $20 not bad, especially as I was running into sites charging $18 for a chain (huh?).

It puts the LBS prices in perspective when one considers inflated S&H prices. I appreciate the "free shipping" sites like BikeIsland. I know its worked into the price, but I like to see one price.

If you get those wheels a nice review after a few weeks would be appreciated. I have a few budget rides I want to get on the road/flip.

DP18s are incredibly overplayed and generally poor quality.

dp-18s they are super sturdy and at 240# that's saying alot

i have the same wheelset with black hubs and rims, they've held up fairly well. Only needed to true the front wheel after several incidents with potholes.

Ps. Are the hubs on the LP18 wheelset actually Formulas? Because I don't think formula makes a 'Loose Bearing' hub.........

I have the DP-18s, and I can testify they're sturdy as hell. I was racing going about 28-30, and hit a curb dead on(dont ask), fell directly on my front wheel. I broke two spokes, but the rim was still completley true. As for my arm, not so lucky.

Any input on these?

The foundation of my build is a 1983 Schwinn Superior frame(700c wheel friendly - woot!). Gonna just clean it up. Gonna keep the frame the way it is(no new paint/no grinding stuff off the frame) and build a SS. Would like to stick with vintage looking parts like the square rims, single piece quill stem, aluminum seat post, etc.

I would plunk down 150 for some Mavic CXP22s.

Just coming back and wrapping up this thread... I settled on the
Mavic CXP22 w/ Formula Track Hubs (http://www.bikeforums.net/showpost.php?p=7503162&postcount=24). $155 shipped and they came with rim tape. They were true out of the box, but the spoke tension varied a little. After riding on them for a while I picked up a truing stand and tensiometer and retentioned them. Solid now. :)

Nice rig. It's refreshing to see an actual bike on here from time to time.
