Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Where Can I Buy Paul "100% Pure Road Crank"

I am working on getting a track wheelset with Paul hubs and would like to have a correct chainline. So I figured the best way to do this would be to get Paul cranks. I look on the Paul website and there they are, a really cool set of cranks. You know, the ones with the Royal Flush Chainring. Anyway, I go to checkout and there is an enigmatic message saying that the road cranks will be available in the Spring of 2008. Ok, last time I checked my watch it was, August. Returning to the previous page I noticed it said the cranks would be available in mid-August. Well, were past that too. Nevertheless, I googled 'Paul Road Cranks' and came up with nothing. Anybody know of a shop or distributor online that carries these? Thanks in advance.

From the Paul site it looks to me like the chainring comes with the crankset for $240. If I were to get the standard Sugino 75's it would be $200 =cranks and $80+=chainring. The Paul's seem like a good deal to me, relatively speaking. Correct me if I'm wrong about the inclusion of the chainring in the $240 price.

I think you are right about the price, but, for the money especially, the Suginos are a better-designed crank. The Paul arms can only take Paul chainrings, I think. If you ever want to change, you have to drop $80 for one of his. When he goes out of business/retires/the singlespeed trend ends and he stops making them, you're stuck. Chainrings that attach that close to the center have to be susceptible to a lot more flex than chainrings supported by the crank arms. Rumor has it that they develop play, as well. Also, Paul components are all CNC machined, I believe, which is a great deal less strong than forged components like Sugino, Shimano and Campagnolo (and a lot more) cranksets.

Paul components have always struck me as being cool (I really like the completely straight crank arms) but, for the most part, a waste of money. If you're going to put down that kind of money for a crankset, get Dura-Ace or Campy Record or something sexy AND functional. And then of course, I can't think of a reason to even spend that much on a crankset for the street, but that's a different discussion that I don't really want to get into here. I guess can understand wanting nice components.

^^ agreed. You can get lots of nice 144 bcd chainrings for cheap (Salsa rings, for example) and have your pick of sizes rather than, uh, 3. Plus one of those three is neither 45 nor 47, which are the best for getting a bunch of skid patches with a big variety of cogs. Proprietary parts always seem like a bad idea, especially when they're something spendy like chainrings.

However, the reason I was trying to steer clear of the Sugino 75's was because I didn't want to play the whole "which SEALED bearing bottom bracket for a correct chainline" game. I don't want the loose bearing Sugino 75 bb because this bike is for the street and it rains frequently where I live. Also, the Paul hubs have a sort of uncommon chainline at 44mm. Anyone out there put together a bike with Paul fixed hubs and Sugino 75's?

The Sugino 75 bottom bracket is just a standard ISO square taper. It's not a special, proprietary design or anything, and if you don't want to deal with loose ball bearings in your BB shell, don't get it. I don't and I wouldn't. I don't know what the stock length is, but it will yield a 42mm chainline. To get a 44mm chainline, get an ISO square taper bottom bracket with a symmetrical spindle 4mm longer than what you've got. Campy makes them, I think. Phil Wood does for sure. The Phil Wood BB is nice. I would totally buy one, if I had the money. The bearings feel awesome, for what that's worth (peace of mind!) and the chainline is adjustable, which is also cool.
