Anyone seen the Movie. "The Triplets of Belleville." A dark comedy, drama? It has gotten great reviews.
Did you enjoy it and how cycling oriented is it? It is an Independent film..It is showing not too far away and wonder if cyclists will enjoy the film... we do enjoy dark comedies.Think that is its genre.
I haven't seen it yet, but I do know it IS a cycling cartoon movie. I read (and heard) that the cartoon stuff was excellent, and that it was french.
It's supposed to be some movie about a poor dude who gets into cycling because his grandparents have a bike and the misadventures he gets into (or something like that). From the previews I saw, it looked as though it was like an early 1900's movie. I really want to see it, but I am betting money that no one I know will want to see it, so I'll be heading over to see it myself.

One of the characters is a cyclist, and the Tour de France plays a pivotal role in the story. Thank goodness movie theaters are dark, because I had a huge silly grin on my face the whole time. The animation is superb. And it is French, but there's only about two lines of dialogue in the whole film.

I saw it last weekend and I highly recommend it.
I don't see too many movies, but this was a lot different and not what I expecte at all. You gotta see it, if not only because of the cyling theme.
Can't wait for it to come out on tape/DVD so I can watch it again, and again.
This one is fun if you have a bit of a dark sense of humor.
The animation is OK, a combination of cel and digital for the most part. The opening sequence is a nice retro '30s style, with some interesting celeb cameos.
Yes, I think cyclists will enjoy it more than average, as bicyling is a central theme. and it has a infectious song that's been stuck in my head for a couple weeks now.

I love to take u turns and distract a conversaion from its central point to some remotely related thought.
Don't we all do that dailly.? Everyone does. Gives our discussions variety.
Anyway, those who saw "Triplets of Belleville" seem to like it.Tomorrow we will see it.
So what are your favorite dark comedies? Should post another thread. I won't
Dark comedies I enjoyed. Among my favorites: " U Turn" and "Very Bad Things." Mildly sadistic humor.Makes my day.
Loved the scene with Cameron Diaz running down the street with a toilet plunger, the reburial scene out in the desert, and the final scene of "U Turn" when the water hose broke on Sean Penn's car.
So to unify my entry..Is "Triplets of Belleville" up to my dark standards.?

We ended up seeing "Triplets" yesterday. My wife and one other cyclist friend....Loved it. Bizarre.
I can't wait to get it on video, either. Wonder if it can be purchased now. Yes, the opening scene was a stitch.
As determined cyclist as I am, never have I collapsed into bed without a shower. That would end my cycling daze.
But, the message of the movie to cyclists. You better train harder before that difficult climb.. The consequences of riding the sag wagon are unknown.Had they not been the last three than other victims would have met Belleville.
You know the three cyclists captivated to the video of the Tour De France , they did not look all that miserable. Determined, I would say....Are we all that far gone.?..Keep your eye on the ball, don't give up and all that kind of motivational stuff. Some of us do like to ride every day and the video seemed pretty real.
The three cyclists captured following their sag scene; I was wondering what was in the hydro pack....? Don't think it was Endurox.... Yes, I had the same silly smirk on my face for the whole movie..
My wife liked it and she hates animation.
Can't wait for it to come out on tape/DVD so I can watch it again, and again.
Your wait ends May 4.

For some reason this film took a long time to get down under.
Just saw it on the weekend and loved it. It is the most original film I've seen since Memento.
The animation style is retro, the characters are kooky, the riders are well hugely endowed in the leg department. Very little dialogue is needed as the characters quickly develop. I do enjoy a good pixar flick but The Triplets of Belleville is something wonderful and original.
Most definitely a cycling movie, but that could be because I see the world that way :)

Oh, wow...I finally saw this after wanting to for ages. I didn't even know it was a cycling movie, and I came over to see if you guys had heard of it yet.
My God, it's been AGES since I saw anything so wonderfully, brilliantly, spectacularly WEIRD! I must own this video!

In case anyone is interested, BlockBuster Video has this on their previously viewed racks right now. You can pick the DVD up for I believe 12.99 or they usually run a 2 for $20 special ...

mmm, the triplets of belleville!
we watched this film a couple of weeks ago. it is actually a visually dark movie. to catch all the detail, you really should watch it in a dark room.
the highlight of the film is the muscles in the bicyclist's legs. when you see it, you'll get it.
after seeing the movie, you'll get the theme song stuck in your head at odd moments. not an entirely bad thing.
I just got this from Netflix on Saturday. All I can say is WOW.
Kind of bummed that the subtitles and english language options didn't work with my playstation, though. You could see them in the clips where they interviewed the director and animators, but not in the actual movie. Luckily you don't really need the dialogue to know what's going on - it's pretty much silent...

As this movie has about a page total of words in it that could be translated, don't worry, you didn't miss anything not having the subtitles.
And the movie is not so much silent as it is "not spoken"; there's plenty to listen to. Pictures here suffice for a thousand words (or more).
We rented this during the summer and I enjoyed it and my kids loved it. It is dark humor; the cyclists are hugely cartooned, the dog is definately a character-- and Grandma- those glasses, those eyes! The part where she is coaching the cyclist grandson, following behind him blowing that whistle--very perversely funny! All Americans are huge and obese, but those Frenchmen aren't given much quarter in that department either. The movie is populated by a whole lot of grotesques.
The detail in the film is rich, even when the computer animation kicks in. This film reminds me of "Princess Mononoke" as both movies are richly drawn and look like art by hand.

I'll say this was a great film! I was about to create a thread to mention it, and then thought to search for "Belleville" first - glad I did!
As others have said, there's no subtitles in English, but you don't need them. This is more about watching than it is about language. Oh, and this is not a "kids cartoon" - it ain't Bugs Bunny! It's an adult drama set in a cartoon.
Good stuff!
